Don't get me wrong, a lot of comic fans have wanted all our lives for good comic book movies to be made. The sudden rush of these movies is great at first glance. But then we saw a backwash in the comic book industry. The Essential series of TPB's came out around the time of the first X-men movie. As well the Ultimate series debued around that time as well. The X-men got an additional monthly title, along with comic adaptations of the comic-to-movie adaptations. The trend that I am trying to show here is that the Marvel is trying to capitalize on their success of their characters by publishing more of their stuff and leaving the others for crap. DC is doing the same thing because of the success of Justice League.
People see these movies and then suddenly think that they know the character. I am willingly to bet that some of these people think that these characters only appeared on those 1970's tv shows or those 1960's cartoons. People only like the show and would never bother with reading a comic. Then there are others who will now begin to read comics, but only those that have had movies. There really shoulded be a problem there but the publishers change the books to conform to these people and not us. Kyle Rayner was replaced as the Green Lantern for the JLA with John Stewart because that is the way they have it on the cartoon. Wolverine and Spiderman are now on the Avengers simply because they are popular. I mean Wolverine?!! This is the same sort of crap that they pulled in the 90's with the whole Heroes Reborn crap. "Who cares about the Avengers and FF, we got 100 X-men related titles!" I hate this.
Another problem that I have with this trend is that these movies can't give the same experience that a comic can, so people get the wrong idea of what comic is about. There are so many more visual and literary attributes in comics that just don't translate to the screen.
The only good thing that I see coming from this is that maybe people will take comics more seriously. The myth that they are just for kids may go away, seeing as these movies are breaking records in the box office. I am not usually a pessimist but I think this won't happen. Merchandising will make it seem just as childish as ever with all the Spiderman lunch boxes and such.
I will continue to read my Avengers and JLA, and will just have to wait until the next fad in hollywood comes along.
