The top 5 Best Star Trek First Officers

This was Matt's reply to the article I did on "The Top 5 Best Star Trek Captains", and also marks the first inclusion of his remarks on this site. Here is a direct copy of his message:

5) The Indian guy, I don't know how to spell his name. He's a sissy. Sure he knows his stuff but compared to the rest of the field he's a nobody.

4) Trip Tucker. New kid on the block in terms of first officers, not much in command experience because he's an engineer, but this was a time more similar to ours and the make up of the crew isn't so compartmentalized. But he's quick on his feet and well respected.

3) Kira and Riker. Again good for both of them. Riker is more composed and learn everything through star fleet, so he's more by-the-book than Kira. She on the other hand was part of the resistence so even though she doesn't know everything, she sure to learn quickly.

1) Spock. 'nuff said

Now here are my thoughts: As an engineer I need criteria to base these kinds of decisions on. The criteria I chose to judge them by was based on what my choice for best captain said he wanted in a first officer: doesn't allow his/her captain to look stupid, will follow orders dispite disagreeing with them (although I will be light with this one since it is sometimes cooler when they fight back), takes command fast if something happens to the captain, and of course overall coolness. My choices are:

(#5) Charles "Trip" Tucker III: In the best captains I put Cap. Archer 4th because he is relatively new but still showed promise (plus anyone can beat out Janeway). He never seems to take control when the situation arises, probably because Archer is that good that he is never gone. Either that or Matt and I have it all wrong and T'Pol is actually the 1st officer. If that is the case then I should say a little about T'Pol: she sucks (...I wish). If she is the one then she is definitely at the bottom. she disagrees with Archer all the time, allows him to make an ass of himself, and she isn't cool by any standard (hot but not cool). The only thing she does right to be here is she takes command quickly, but only to assert control over the "stupid" humans.

(#4) Chaquotay: He sucks less than Trip only because he has been around longer, but only barely. This guy has all the making s for a cool guy (maquis leader) but he is just comes up as Janeway's lapdog, if that isn't an insult than what is? He does meet some of the criteria: He takes command right away when the captain seems possessed (which should be more often since she always acts stupid) and Controls the crew so they don't have a mutiny against their dumbass captain (for this he deserves to number one since her crew should want her dead). He doesn't however follow through with her orders dispite his objections. When she made the deal with the Borg during the 8472-Borg war, He broke the deal right after she went into a coma. I argreed with him but he has a duty to her and he shouldn't have done that. Some can argue that he is used to being his own captain and that's why he does what he wants. I say whatever as long as he is cool, but he is not!

(#3) Spock: I think he does meet all the criteria but he isn't that cool. He has no emotion, okay, but that doesn't mean he can't do exciting things. He is disadvantaged in that the original series was made in the 60's when special effects weren't that great and stories were simple. I can't sy much about him, he just is number three to me.

(#2) Kira: I am not sure about this one. I think I wan to change her to thrid and spock second. She is a little cooler than Spock but she isn't that much better at the other criteria. I can't recall her doing any of ther other things. she kicked more ass than Spock, that's it.

(#1) Will Riker: I am very sure about this one. He is everything the criteria asked for. He would probably be second on the captain list if he were captain. He is charismatic to boot.

The discrepancies between my list and Matt's arose from the fact that he started this article but didn't state his criteria whereas I did afterwards. The criteria he used is close enough to mine to compare the lists.
