Review of The Chronicles of Riddick

The only reason I saw this movie was because I am what I guess is called a completist, as in I have to see the completion of a story or all the sequels. Its a term I heard on a message board about comic book readers who are collectors as well. The reason I saw it in the theatre and not as a rental later on, which is what I do with crappy movies, is because Matt and another old friend wanted to do something and The Chronicles of Riddick was the only movie that neither of us has seen.

The movie started well with sort of an update on what has happened to Riddick since Pitch Black. We eventually learn what happened to the rest of the survivors from that movie. Then we are introduced to this huge conquering army that destroys whole planets for the Underverse or some crap like that. I don't want to "spoil" any more of the movie. I can't anyway, there isn't much of a story to spoil. Riddick gets captured and sent to a prison where he spends too much time and then falls ass backwards into an escape plan and some how escapes the planet.

There were too many things wrong with this movie. Bad acting and way too many special effects are common in sci-fi movies and I don't care about that anyway. What I do care about is going somewhere in a movie. Okay, so this army either kills or converts people. Converts them to what? They never explained any of this. Ooo, a big army! I like originality, not a blatant copy of the Borg or the Empire. Another problem I had was how much they wanted Riddick to be cool. You could tell that they were trying to make Vin Diesel into the next Schwarzenegger by how many oneliners they gave him. The lines he had were crap anyway, some didn't make any sense. Some made him seem so stupid. Ex: Riddick meets the girl from mission impossible 2, whose character had no consequence to the story at all except tobe the girl that Riddick tries to get with. He says, "Its been a while since I smelt beautiful". The writers probably wanted him to sound like a rogue who is sexually attracted to her, like a badboy who gets girls by just smiling at them kind of guy. BUt instead he just sounds like he is describing that he hasn't bathed in a while. The line was so stupid we had to laugh in the theatre. Vin Diesel is responsible for making this the crap it was. Riddick is supposed to be a rough criminal killer type guy, so why would he cry like a wuss when Kira dies? I understand how he has a soft spot for the little kids, but the kind of character he is supposed to be wouldn't cry at all! Another scene that was meant to make him seem so cool was the teacup scene. It takes place while Riddick is still in the prison, he tells these guys who are trying to kill Kira that he will kill him with his teacup. First, a teacup? I mean I get what they were trying to do but at least don't tells us he is drinking Tea like an old lady. The way Vin said his lines in this scene totally killed it. He has this gay quality to his voice that totally underminds this character.

The thing that I hated the most, that I hate the most about many of the new characters in comics and movies, is tha he is played as a villain whose goal just happens by chance to be a good one. We have had guys in the past (ie: Batman) who have been borderline bad, but they were still good guys. A villain is a villain, no question. "Fight evil with a different kind of Evil" BLOW ME! The end of the movie Riddick is in control of the Necromongers. Why the hell would you let him take control?

Overall I think this movie is perfect for the Fast and The Furious crowd, lots of flashing lights and a not too hard story to follow. As for we who don't breath through our mouths, it sucked. It could have been more than it was. I especially want to see more of what the necromongers were and want they wanted. I wanted more from Lord Marshal, what were his powers or what exactly is he? The story needed more.
