The Best and Worst in Entertainment for 2003

I was thinking about what my favourites were at the moment in all the forms of entertainment that I enjoy. I decided to compile a list of things that I believe to be the best and worst. This may become a yearly thing, I will see how much of a response I get.

Sci-Fi TV Series

Best Sci-Fi TV Series: Stargate-SG1
This is my favourite show overall. I love this show. The characters have so much to offer and the stories are great. The continuity in this series is wicked. They set up their stories really well. The ancients storyline surprised me, I had no idea that they were who they were (No spoilers here). They have only had a few (maybe one or two) bad episodes. This show is going to be the next Star Trek. They are coming out with a spinoff and maybe a movie.

Worst Sci-Fi TV Series: Firefly
There is a reason this show was cancelled, it sucked ass. I get the idea of using anachronismas a setting of a series, but you should take it so far as they did. Space age cowboys would have been fine except that they didn't do anything exciting. No shoot outs like in westerns or space battles like in sci-fi, just slow stuff like a train robbery or something. I was actually repulsed by this show. This doesn't usually happen with a Sci-Fi show.

Best Ever Sci-Fi TV Series: Star Trek: The Next Generation
What other show would be here? For me this one is the best ever because it was the first one I ever got into. It opened up the world of Sci-Fi to me. After this show came all the other ones: DS9, Voyageur, and Enterprise. The original series started the franchise but it was this show that brought it back to TV and reignited the franchise in my opinion.

Worst Ever Sci-Fi TV Series: Earth: Final Conflict
Matt is going to laugh his ass off when he sees this here. We were driving by the studio where it was filmed and I yelled my grieviences out the window. I think there was a reason Roddenbery didn't produce this show. It started out ok I guess. The premise, to me, had potential but they didn't take far enough. The rebels could have fought back with more gusto. The reason I put it under the worst of all time is because they changed the premise. I can't remember a show ever changing the premise so much. The last couple of seasons are or were about a new race of aliens attacking earth after the Tailons became extinct or whatever. The thing that bothers me is that when the Tailons came, that earth wasn't much different from our own. After they left and these new guys showed up, that earth had alien technology at their disposal so they were a match for the new guys. The whole point of the show was that the alien invaders were too advanced to take on, that is what makes these stories fun. what the hell is the point of the show now?! And worse yet, they killed off the main character and replaced him with the girl who wasn't much of a character to begin with. There are probably way worse shows but this made it to air, that's the difference.

Cartoons

Best Cartoon: Justice League
It is a cartoon based on a comic book, what is better? They have kept it close enough to the comic to keep me happy. There is also sufficient action to satisfy me as well. It is the best on the air right now basically because of the comic connection. I am still waiting for more but it is better than everything else on the air right now.

Worst Cartoon: Anything on Fox right now
I generalized this one because they are all the same right now. They are all pokemon clones. Don't get me wrong, I like anime. My site should attest to that. But Fox only buys the rights to the crappy kiddy shows tht are just clones. Nothing original like the old days: Tick, X-men, Spiderman, etc. They haven't created anything new in years. Those shows suck.

Best Ever Cartoon: Gargoyles
This show only had 2-3 seasons but it seemed to be a lot longer than that. This show was full of subplots and the best continuity I have seen. The cool parts only happened in the second season, ubbt that is expected since the first laid all the ground work for the second season. There was a reason for everything that happened in the show. The writers played with all kinds of genres, like sci-fi and fantasy. One of my hobbies is mythology. This show was full of mythological references. It also inspired many of the characters I created for my comic books. It is probably the only show outside of Star Trek and Stargate that I am constantly interested in watching the reruns. I know what each episode is about, I know the endings but still I could watch each one over and over. There was probably only one truly bad episode, but I like the show so much that I can't think of it.

Worst Ever Cartoon: Avengers
It would seem strange that I put a comic book based cartoon here, but this one was terrible. None of their episodes were good. They totally screwed up the Avengers. They didn't have Captain America as leader for one thing, or Ironman and Thor as members. These guys are the originals and they aren't used? Come on. The fact that Fox was trying to use the same gimmicks they used in the X-men cartoon really pissed me off. Hawkeye is a bit of a rogue, he is nothing like Wolverine. They gave him a deep, raspy voice to make him sound similar to the voice given to wolverine in the X-men cartoon. Tigra was voiced by the exact same actor as Rogue from X-men. They made her the same sexy character that Rogue was. Who the hell cares about Tigra? The one major thing that I hated was the same gimmick that is common to all the new crap comming from Fox, the pseudo-anime style action. What I mean by this is the same thing I complain about when I talk about the Power Rangers, armour plating. Armour is an essential thing in battles if you are that type of character. But armouring up a guy for no reason is the stupid thing ever. The Avengers that were on this show do not wear armour, yet Fox felt it necessary to give it to them in a blatantly obvious armouring up sequence with a surpriseingly catchy theme song (the only thing I liked about the show). So not only did they make them have to wear armour, they didn't allow them to use their powers without it. The best example of how stupid this was and how much the writers messed up the characters was the episode where their armour was disabled, which caused them to all become stiff and not be able to use their powers!

Reality Shows

I should first mention that I don't exactly like reality tv and that almost all of it is stupid. It is the worst trend I have seen on tv.

Best Reality Show: Monster Garage
I don't really think of this show as a reality show since it isn't one of those ones where they take a bunch of idiots and make them do stupid things for no reason. This is an interesting show to watch because you see how things are made. I mean they may make weird things, but they still use regular methods to do so.

Worst Reality Show: Temptation Island
What the hell is the point of this show? Couples come on this show to see if they can stay togehter? Isn't this something they should be trying to do anyway? I hate this show. You know what the true purpose of a show like this is, to grab ratings, that's it. Sexy girls and hot guys walking around in swimwear. That's it. That is the worst reason for a show.

Best Ever Reality Show: Cops
Probably the best thing to come from Fox ever as well. Again, this isn't much of a "reality show", although the idiots are still there. This is evil fun, watching them get arrested, but they deserve it so its ok.

Worst Ever Reality Show: Big Brother 1
This show sucked, even for a reality show. At least in the other shows there is someone stupid or hot to watch, there was none of that on this show. Therefore there was nothing appealing about this show. Subsequent shows have learned from the origianl and now have crazy asses as house guests.

This was a long article and I don't feel like I wrote anything interesting, so I may not do this again. HaHa.
