The Dreamstorm Key Description

Trained by Tenchi Kaze ([email protected])

Name: Promise

Age: 14, going on 15 (more on that later...)

Physical Description: As others usually see him, Promise has no set physical description. He can become whatever his current Master would believe to be the "ideal male" in terms of appearance. So he could look younger or older, feminine or masculine, simple or extravagant, tall or short, etc. The reason for this ability to change appearances is due to the fact that Masters only encounter Promise in their dreams. That's right, there is technically no one in the Dreamstorm suite apart from the person who has purchased the Key, and Promise only manifests himself in the person's dreams. Even so, the pleasure he offers in those dreams seems so real it almost doesn't matter to anybody that it is not really happening.

However, that is just what others see. In truth, Promise does have a physical form. It is just that only a very select few ever get to see it. He is a boy of 14 years, nearly 15. His hair is nearly shoulder-length and is a dark shade of crimson in color. His body is quite frail and his skin almost white. In fact, Promise is so frail that he cannot even walk by himself, and needs special breathing treatment every six hours or so. He can sit up in his bed and move his arms around somewhat, but that is basically the extent of his ability for independent movement. When his eyes are open (which is not very often), you can see that they are fully white and have no pupils, meaning that he is quite blind. What Promise lacks in sight he makes up for in hearing, touch, and smell, and he uses these senses to his advantage when interacting with the few people who are allowed to see him (which include doctors and nurses for the most part).

Clothing: In the dreamscape, anything he wants or that his Master desires. In the physical world, all he wears is a simple white hospital gown.

Background: Nobody knows a scrap's worth of clear information about Promise's origins before he arrived. All anybody knows is that on one day, an unknown sponsor brought a blind little ten-year old boy to the Palace. This sponsor was upper class, and was certainly wealthy enough to pay a great deal for the Palace to take care of the boy. The sponsor claimed to be the boy's father, and told the higher-ups in Palace management that he knew the Palace was one of the safest places in the world to hide someone, though he said his reasons for needing to hide the boy were his own. He only mentioned that his son's unique power over dreams had something to do with it. The man pleaded for them to take him in, as he had promised his son that he would be safe at the Palace. They finally relented, but under the condition that the boy become a Key. It would be possible to do, if the boy's abilities in the dreamscape were applied to the position.

Desperate, the boy's father agreed to the terms (which surprised even the people who proposed the terms. What could be worse for the boy than being put to work as a slave in his condition?...) He refused to tell anybody the boy's real name, and later people started to call him "Promise" upon recalling those words the father had said about the promise of the boy's safety. So Promise was given a special setup: he would stay permanently in the Palace's hospital wing, and a separate room would be constructed for his Masters to stay in when they slept. Strangely enough, it was easy to teach Promise what he needed to do with his abilities to be a successful Key. His maturity for his age made him ready for actually starting his work by the age of 12.

Personality: Promise likes to speak, even if no one is around. Since he cannot see and can hardly move very well, he prides himself in his speaking ability. Anyone who has had a conversation with him finds that he is quite quick-minded, and very expressive (qualities which also manifest themselves in the dreamscape). He is adaptable and creative when it comes to doing new things in dreams for his Masters, his vast imagination letting him come up with any number of potential paradises. With his ability to change his appearance and act a specified personality, Promise usually makes a good first impression on Masters, and knows that he is good at doing it. Though sometimes, he can get impatient— whether it is with a Master that can't decide what kind of dream they want or if the doctors are being annoying while he is awake —and he will voice this impatience strongly. Promise will also do anything he can to avoid talking about his condition. He will mention how warm the sun feels through the window, or ask how someone's day was, or even make a random comment like "Cheese would be nice right now" or "My nose is itchy" if it means he doesn't have to talk about that. He refuses to let his condition bog him down from being generally happy, unless it absolutely will not be ignored.

Room: The room that Promise's Masters stay in is not very striking to say the least. It looks very much like a middle-class apartment. However, there is the occasional sign here and there showing that they are in fact staying in the fancy-shmancy Palace (i.e.: gold painted patterns lining the tops and bottoms of the white walls, wood on the furniture kept extremely well polished, specially embroidered towels, etc.) Everything is crammed together: living room, kitchen and bedroom all in one room, with a separate space about as big as a closet for the toilet. The main draw is the bed, which is obviously very comfortable and warm. The blankets are white with little sky blue clouds patterned around the edges, and the pillows are all stuffed with feathers.

Promise's room in the hospital wing is very typical of... well... a hospital. White walls, a couple machines monitoring his status constantly, a window on the wall, and a little nightstand next to his bed. On the nightstand is a buzzer that he can use to call a nurse for something if he needs it.

In terms of relative location, Promise's room is in the very secluded part of the hospital wing, and is directly beneath the Dreamstorm suite where his Masters reside. This closeness of the rooms makes it easier for Promise to reach out to his current Master through the dreamscape.
