The so called Celtic Nations are the present day descendants of the Ancient Celts. At one time their territory exetended over much of Europe and even into some parts of Asia Minor (Galatia). Their prowess rivaled with that of Rome and it was to be the Roman Empire the cause of their downfall.
As the centuries progressed the fall of the Mighty Roman Empire lead way to a new invasion. The Germanic Peoples (Franks, Angles, Saxons, Goths...) were on the move and the native lands of the Celts shranked ever more...

The dawn of the Middle Ages saw the Celts getting back a bit of their former independence with the establishment of the Kingdom of Alba, that of Brittany or the Kingdom of Asturies.
Unfortunately, one by one, the Celtic Estates fell within the orbit of bigger, stronger nations (England, France, Spain).
With the Union Act of 1707 the last independent Celtic nation (Scotland) became just another possession of the United Kingdom of Great Britan.

Things were about to change, though, in the XX century. In 1916 the Irish started their own War of Independence after numerous attempts in the previous centuries. 1921 was the year of the creation of the Irish Free State. A few years later (1949) the Irish Republic was born, albeit missing six Protestant counties of Ulster.
In 1981, both Asturies and Galicia, were granted Autonomy within the Spanish Kingdom. Scotland and Wales got their own parlament back with the 1997 referendum on Restoration.
The Isle of Man is an independet estate de facto, within the Commonwelth and with the British Queen as their Head of Estate.
Nor Cornwall nor Brittany enjoy any king of self-rule but the idea has wide support amongst the population.
