Okay, let's get one thing straight here. I was born and raised in Massachusetts. And honestly, if I EVER heard someone say that witches were burned in Salem, I would first point and laugh hysterically, and then quite possibly commit suicide. My history teachers would have killed me on the spot if I ever said anything so stupid! One other thing that bothers me is that everyone seems to think these trials were held in modern day Salem, MA. In actuality, they took place in Salem Village, which today is Danvers, MA. Get your facts right people! First off, there were no real "witches" in Salem. In fact, one of the men that was hanged was a reverend (read: a PRIEST) and said the Lord's Prayer flawlessy (supposedly if you stumbled while saying it you were in cohorts with the devil) before he was hanged. One man was pressed to death (I think Giles Cory, but please don't quote me on that). And the rest of the people hanged were just unfortunately unliked by the community for some reason or another. The first woman accused, a black woman, named Tituba, confessed and was spared. But, by no means does that mean she was a "witch." She worked for Reverend Parris, and it was his daughter and some of her friends that started this "hysteria." Now, if you really want to learn more about the Salem "witch" trials, try picking up a history book! Now onto the topic of the "Burning Times." I highly DOUBT that any of the people burned during this time were actual "witches" (your welcome to try and prove me wrong if you feel inclined to do so). The poor souls that were burned in Europe were most likely Christians. That being said, the fact that I see "Never again...the Burning Times" flashing across many Wiccan, Pagan and Witchcraft sites disgusts me. I would be ashamed if I ever saw anything like that on my friends sites. Christians should be the ones mourning those lost during the Inquisition, there were no Wiccans! So for the Lord and Lady's sake and the sake of all Pagans, take down the "Burning Times" banners! |
