"So, are we going to one of those after parties or what?" Cameron looked over at him in the drivers seat. His eyes were focused on the road and his fingers fidgeted on the stickshift as he waited for the light to turn green.
"Mark?" She smiled as his head turned to look at her.
"Yeah?"
Cameron smirked and narrowed her eyes. "You okay?"
"Yeah, good. Did you say something?"
Cameron tilted her head with a smile. "I was just wondering if we were going to head over to any of those after-prom parties."
Mark looked over at her; glittery lids sparkled intriguing green eyes, dark chocolate brown hair coiled in curls over her shoulder's. Her cheeks were flushed from adrenaline left over from the last dance of prom which ended not ten minutes ago. Her midnight blue dress fluffed against her fingers that messed with the trim at the knee's.
"Well," He paused, cleared his voice. "if you're up for it, I figured we could maybe just hang over at the park for a bit. Listen to music or something." His fingers tapped against the top of the steering wheel as he put it in first and turned onto the adjacent street. He knew she'd go for that. She didn't like the usual.
She smiled at the thought. Parties weren't her scene anyway. "Yeah, I'd love that."
"Kewl. I figure we could just play the music from the car. It's quiet enough to hear it away over by those trees."
"Um...we're talking about Almond Cove Park right?"
"Mmmhmm."
"Sounds good."
"You're not tired yet are ya?" He smiled over at her as he pulled up to the curb at the side of the park.
She smiled back and giggled. "Nope. Let's go." She glanced at the radio system as 'hey mama' started playing and she smiled. "Turn that up." She said as she jumped out of the car.
Mark chuckled as he turned up the volume to the radio. He rolled down the windows then walked over towards her and across the short grass field to where she was leaning against a tree. He nervously walked towards her, fiddingly with his keys in his hand. Would he be able to tell her?
He glanced down at the ground as he continued walking, then up at her as he approached. If it was anyone else he probably would have thought of a useful way to set a romantic scene with the positions they were in but he had to do something totally opposite.
"So, what's up." She asked, smiling up at him. "Why don't you sit?"
"Actually, can we walk around or somethin?" He stuck his hands in his pockets and returned a grin to her when she started walking beside him. She was always smiling. That was one thing that got to him.
They walked in silence and after a few minutes Cameron cleared her voice. "Is there something you want to talk about? You seem sort of quiet now since we left."
He turned and they both stopped to look at eachother. He glanced over at the playground and then back at her with a relutant expression.
"Hmm...judging by your expression, this could be bad."
"Depends on how you take it."
"If you try to hook me up with one of your dorky friends again like last summer, then I'm not gonna take that so well."
"Actually, it's just a little bit different than that."
"Hmm...will he actually nottry to accidently get on top of me in the car?"
Mark grimaced. He wouldn't forget that one, or the only punch he threw at a friend. "Sorry bout that one." He smiled when she laughed.
"Better off forgotten anyway. So what's going on?"
"I, uh," He looked at her, brought his hand up to take a few locks of hair from behind her to lay it over her shoulder. "I sort of have a...thing."
"A thing." Cameron narrowed her eyes, tilted her head.
He smiled. "Yeah."
She waited for him to keep talking. He just stood there. "Elaborating would be so nice."
"You."
Cameron frowned. "What about me? What thin...oh...hmm." Cameron looked down between them at his knee that kept bouncing in place. She grinned, bit her finger. "Um...am I right about what I think you're telling me?" She looked up at him, watched him rub the back of his neck with his hand then scratch the side of his nose.
"Well, if you think I'm telling you that I have a thing, feelings, for you, then yeah." He watched her nod and continued to chew against the side of her finger; one of the many things he found absolutely adorable.
"When?"
Mark frowned and looked out at the car. Heard the deep beats of the radio. "Month or so."
Cameron looked up at him and smiled. "It's flattering..." She paused, watched him look back at her. "And very sweet."
Mark grinned sheepishly. But his lips thinned when he saw her hurt expression. "I hate to tell you that I'm sorry. You're one of my best friends. You always will be. But I just don't think I have the same thing that you're talking about."
Mark nodded and played his fingers over her hair once again, then tucked them in his pockets.
Cameron smiled. "I don't know if this will make it worse for you, but I won't feel awkward about it if you won't." She returned a smile to his.
"It's kewl." He said, his eyes pinned hers and she saw the hurt.
"I know it's cliche but I'm sorry. I know what this is like. But I can't be with someone that I don't have feelings for. Just like you wouldn't with any other girl right now because...well...it's me right now."
She watched him rock back on his heels and looked out at the car again.
Mark went to look back but found that she had stepped closer and was closing her lips against his. His eyebrows raised in shock and he jerked his hands out of his pockets to rest them against her sides. His eyes closed and he relaxed a bit from the shock, pressed his lips against hers.
But it didn't last long enough though.
She pulled back and smiled. "Just for you. Sense I trust you."
Mark chuckled, sighed. "Thanks."
"I'd say anytime, but..." She watched him smile and start to laugh, joined in.
"Well, what do you say we just hang for a little while longer. I haven't been on these playgrounds in so long."
Mark laughed and started walking towards it with her. "Why not."
He watched her turn from walking infront of him and smile.
He'd never forget her smile.
