She couldn't sleep. There was just too much on her mind. She squirmed under the covers of her bed, not gaining any comfort of any of the positions she tried. She whipped the covers back with frustration. It was a warm night anyway with summer creeping up. She glanced at the clock on her bedside table and sighed. It wa in the wee hours of the morning and she was supposed to be sleeping.
Not gonna happen.
There's a place off Ocean Avenue
Where I used to sit and talk with you
We were both 16 and it felt so right
Sleeping all day, staying up all night
Staying up all night
She sat up in bed and looked towards her purse that lay under her computer chair. She brought her hand up to bite against her finger as she contemplated what to do. She smirked at the fact that her purse was on it's side with everything pouring out...jut like the rest of her room.
She needed to get out. Maybe just to go sit at the rocks of the light cove and just be out. She looked towards her bedroom door and thought of her mom in the next room. She'd have to sneek out. Her teeth continued it's useless biting and she quickly shimmied off her bed to crawl to her purse. She grabbed her cell phone and settled herself on her legs as she dialed.
She wanted him with her too. She smiled at the thought of what his reaction would be to calling him this early. But she didn't care to mind him.
She just wanted him. He couldn't resis that explanation. SHe bit her bottom lip as she waited for hm to pick up the phone. She smiled at his groggy voice a second later- "Who died?"
She giggled. "Hey sweet stuff, it's me." Her voice was a low amused, whisper.
"Nicole?" Her name was a yawn.
"Get up sleepyhead. I want to go to the beach."
"What?! Now?!"
Nicole sighed and tugged her hair over her shoulder. "I need to go somewhere. Just to get out." She paused, listened to him breathe on the other end. "I can't sleep and I want to be with you." Her finger was back to her mouth.
There's a place on the corner of Cherry Street
We would walk on the beach in our bare feet
We were both 18 and it felt so right
Sleeping all day, staying up all night
Staying up all night
"Sugar, there is nothing more I want to do than spend time with you. But at," She heard him groan and pause, probably checking the time. "one in the morning?"
"Please, baby?"
"First of all, stop gnawing at your finger, cause I know you're doing that. Second, you better be out there in ten minutes."
Nicole smiled and tucked her hair behind her ear. "You know I love you."
"And I you. Be ready."
They hung up and Nicole quickly grabbed her pj pants and slipped them on over her rolled up boxers, that she, would never admit that she took from her boyfriends drawer when he didn't know. She bit her lip as she rummaged through the clothes on the floor for the things she needed. Probably not the best idea to wear them but she didn't have time to change and to sneek out.
If I could find you now things would get better
We could leave this town and run forever
Let your waves crash down on me and take me away
When she had her keys and cell phone in hand, she looked around her for anything that could make it look like she was still in bed. She quickly stuffed the cliche pillows under the covers as a sleeping form and then took a minutes to pull her hair into a ponytail.
She opened the door quietly, peeking through the crack before opening it wider and stepping through. She crept across the living room and to the front door. A small clank was heard behind her and she quickly turned. Not spotting anyone, she turned the knob gently and sighed at the quietness of the the door opening. She shut if closed and turned to walk down the steps fromt eh apartment. Halfway down, she saw his car pull up and smiled as she skipped down the steps faster and then to the car.
She opened the door and got inside, shut the door behind her. She launched herself at him with a giggle, wrapping her arms tight around his neck and kissed his cheek a few times before pulling away a bit and taking his face in her hands to kiss his lips firmly.
"You rock so much." She sat right in her eat then and watched him. There was a small smile on his lips and his eyebrows were raised in speculation as he looked at her. "Do I get a word in now?"
Nicole made a look up towards the roof of the car then leaned forward to kiss him again. "Okay, now you can."
She watched him chuckle at her antics as he put the car in reverse. "okay, we can't be there too long. And if we get caught, I want compensation for this whole shebang."
Nicole laughed. "Ooo, compensation, huh? What kind?"
He gave her a side grin and glance that she loved so much and took her hand to. "We'll discuss it."
They drove out and onto the main road then towards the beach. They pulled up at the front parking lot and loked out at the pitch black night. The waves glistened from the light critters that came out at night and Nicole got out of the car. It smelled of the sea. She walked around the back of the car, waiting for him. The warm breeze rushed over her as she looked out towards the water. She heard him come up behind her and felt her pulse jump when his arms wrapped around her from behind and his lips caressed her bare shoulder.
"You're int his skimpy night shirt, sugar. You're gonna freeze."
There's a piece of you that's here with me
It's everywhere I go, it's everything I see
When I sleep, I dream and it gets me by
I can make believe that you're here tonight
That you're here tonight
"Eh, it's warm enough. If not I've got you to keep me warm."
They both laughed and walked down the small hill to the sand. They'd have to walk a little along the bottom of the cliffs to get some light but already Nicole was feeling more relaxed and less fussy.
She'd needed this. Barefeet, holding hands, the calmness of the sea. And him. So much him.
She looked up at him as they walked along the wet beach and she knew when he looked and smiled back...
...it felt right.
~"Are those my boxers?!"
If I could find you now things would get better
We could leave this town and run forever
Let your waves crash down on me and take me away
