When he'd first laid eyes on
her, he'd just made the program. Cameron remembered her standing there, off in
the distance, decked out in full uniform, more than just her professionalism
catching his eye.
He'd watched her, but didn't
say a word.
The second time he'd seen
her, he'd made commander of his own squad of F-302s. She was closer that time,
and he'd seen the light catch her eyes.
He'd smiled at her, but
didn't say a word.
The third time, he'd been
laid up in the hospital. He didn't remember much then, but he recalled her
steady voice, her bright face, her gratitude.
He thought he'd grinned at
her, but he couldn't say a word.
The fourth time, they'd had
lunch. It was a cool day at the café and for the first time, they were face to
face. They'd kicked back and talked shop, just enjoying each other's company.
He knew he'd flirted with
her, but she hadn't said a word.
The fifth time, he'd pleaded
with her to rejoin SG-1. She had refused, but he could see right through her.
He could see that need to just be out there living it again.
He knew his feelings were
obvious then, but she decided not to say a word.
The next few times became a
blur. They were a team again; Cameron felt pride in bringing them all back. But
most importantly she was there to watch his six and keep him in line the best
she could. He tried to show his own gratitude in the only way he knew how.
He did his best to charm
her, and though she smiled, she wouldn't say a word.
Now, well, now, he was in
bed lying on his back with a perfect view of the ceiling. A lot had changed
since that first time. His life was more intense, and he knew everyday could be
his last. But he also knew that he had been given a second chance at life and a
second chance to make things work. He knew he wouldn't have to make it alone.
He rolled on his side and
wrapped his arms around her. Cameron breathed out as she held him close and
kissed his neck.
Neither said a word.
