All his life Sam had learned to rely on certain charms and objects for safety and protection. He knew that amulets and talismans could drive away the wicked and safeguard the soul. He knew that spells and holy enchantments could harm a demon and other evil spirits. He knew the security of prayer. He knew that churches and blessed sanctuaries would always be safe havens. Sam took comfort in these things.

He'd taken them for granted.

Sam sat on the bench at the diner table, quiet, his coffee untouched. His brother had a buffet of food spread in front of him – a cheeseburger oozing with heavy cheese sauce, a plate of fries, bags of chips, crackers, pretzels, nuts – the list went on.

Eleven months ago, Sam would have said something. He would have protested. He would have pleaded with Dean to stop, to take care of himself.

But he knew that this feast was not about health. It wasn't about gluttony. It wasn't about the food at all.

Sam understood.

He'd seen Dean flipping through the Bible. He'd watched Dean fool around with iron rods. He'd caught Dean sneak into a church. And now he watched Dean pour the salt over his food.

For all the charms and blessings, the amulets and talismans, the holy words and spells, none would matter. What once was their salvation would soon become Dean's doom.

Sam understood and he didn't say a word.

Soon the day would come where Dean couldn't take them granted any longer.
