She stood in front of him,
bathed in a simple yet elegant grace, a grace that he'd allowed to permeate his
hardened shell long ago. He wasn't sure when it'd happened and he wasn't sure
he'd ever know, but for once the how and why wasn't important to him. All that
mattered was that she was here, now, standing there with the same playful smile
that had captivated him when they'd first met.
Daniel said nothing as he
stepped forward and took her into his arms. He felt her head on his chest, her
hands on his back, her body shifting against him.
And they danced. Quiet,
slow, swaying to the soft music that touched his bedroom. Nothing else
penetrated their space; just the two of them, alone, comfortable and home.
He touched her hair, remembering
the texture. He didn't want to let go. He never wanted to let go.
"Thank you," he
said, still holding her close. "Thank you for everything."
He didn't wait for her to
respond. He didn't wait for her to pull back and study him with her knowing
gaze. He didn't wait at all.
Daniel swallowed hard and
opened his eyes. He winced, the brightness of the gardens jarring him, but he
quickly adjusted, his vision coming into focus.
"And?" the voice
boomed all around him.
Daniel glanced at the
Gamekeeper before he proceeded to disentangle himself from the pod. "It
felt real."
The Gamekeeper clapped his
hands, his face sparkling. "Oh excellent! Shall we do it again?"
Daniel shook his head. While
it was tempting to keep on reviving Janet, living little snatches of life that
had never been more than fantasies and missed opportunities, he knew better
now. He knew he could let her go. He knew he could say goodbye.
Real or imagined, he knew
they would always have that one last dance. And nothing would ever take that
away from him.
