Dean popped the hood to the
Impala and gave the engine a long, intense look. While he'd entrusted his baby
to Sam for only four months, it seemed like a lifetime. At least for him. He
knew he didn't have to check – hell, he shouldn't check – but he had to be
sure.
As he leaned n deeper, Dean
stroked the frame and let out a contented sigh. He knew she had missed him as
much as he had missed her.
"Are you…petting the
car?"
Dean bolted upright and
pulled his best poker face, hoping Sam wouldn't see through him.
"No," he said. "Just admiring your work."
"My work?" Sam
glanced at the Impala as he took a swig from his open bottle.
"Right."
"She's perfect."
"You're such a
liar."
Dean glanced back at the
Impala. The windshield wiper fluid was low and the oil needed changing a month
ago. Still, he knew Sam had done the best he could, considering.
"You done good,
Sammy."
"Yeah?"
Dean nodded.
"Yeah."
There was a hint of a smile
on Sam's face, one the few genuine smiles he could be sure of since he'd
returned from the Pit. Dean figured he'd take what he could.
"Well, now that you're
back, she'll get the treatment she deserves." Sam handled him an unopened
bottle of beer. "Just like it should be."
"Yeah. Everything's
normal again."
They both took a swig and
leaned against the Impala. And even though they knew it wasn't true, they
decided to keep living the lie.
