Daniel had told him he
needed to appreciate nature more.
Daniel – the guy who spent
three quarters of his day holed up in his office under a mountain; the man who
almost always had his nose in a book, or was glued to the computer screen, or
was running to this place and that researching some artifact.
Daniel had not so politely
reminded him that he had years of experience in the field. "In case you
had forgotten, I am an archaeologist. It's my job to appreciate things."
Ah, things. Not nature. And
Daniel had conveniently left out the part where he had to destroy nature in
order to appreciate the things.
Jack appreciated nature. He
fished. He didn't litter – too much. He had a cabin in the Minnesotan woods,
for cryin' out loud.
Which was where he was now.
Jack remained still as he
gazed at the half shut blinds in his cabin's bedroom. It was that time right
before dawn where normally he'd either be trying to sleep off the morning or
more likely getting up to fish.
That was the normal
schedule. Things...weren't so normal anymore. Nor had they been for a long
time.
Daniel had told him he
needed to appreciate nature more.
From where Jack was resting,
he could see the sun poking out over the horizon, obscured in part by the thick
woodland that surrounded his cabin. It wouldn't be long until it spilled over
the quiet lake and warmed the cold earth.
It was warm inside.
Jack shifted, arching his
back as he tried to work out all the kinks in his body. He knew he'd be fine
once he actually lumbered out of bed and got moving, but...this was his
favorite part.
The sunlight began to stream
through the slits of the blinds in strong, concentrated beams until they
flushed out and widened, coursing over the bed sheets in warm waves and
ripples. Jack could feel the heat on his toes as it spread upward and shook
away the chill of night. He breathed out, relishing the tingle it brought to
his skin.
Daniel had told him to
appreciate nature more.
Jack watched silently as the
sunrays bathed Daniel in a soft glow. The light traveled over the contours of
his bare body, sinking into the grooves of his sculpted shoulders, while
dipping and pooling at the small of his back. The light seemed to fix onto his
skin and mold itself around the taunt muscles that were hidden just beneath the
surface. Like a sponge, Daniel soaked in the light. Jack felt the warmth as it
bled through Daniel and seeped into him.
As the sun broke from the
horizon and its light flooded the cabin, Daniel finally stirred. Sleepily, he
lifted his head off of Jack's chest and braced himself on the bed, pausing long
enough to squint and glare at Jack through sandy eyes.
"What are you
doing?" Daniel asked hoarsely.
"Why, I'm appreciating
nature."
"Pervert," Daniel
mumbled before collapsing back onto Jack.
Jack smiled, not at all
bothered by the comment. Why should he be? Daniel had pressed his body closer,
his lips grazing Jack's neck.
Jack decided he needed to
appreciate nature more often.
