Mount Russell, California, USA (14,086 ft / 4293 m): via the East Ridge

Mount Russell, East Ridge Just below Russell's East summit

Brief report:

Day hiked to the summit of Russell from Whitney Portal via the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek 'til Upper Boy Scout Lake. Went with Mike. We did the Rockwell Variation starting at the western end of Upper Boy Scout Lake and then took the broad, large chute to the Russell-Carillon saddle. To get to this chute keep walking west/northwest 'til you almost hit a rock headwall. Turn right (northeast) here. Climb ~ 100 feet up and then you'll see the very broad, large chute. The East Ridge, I think, is mostly class 2 (though is rated class 3), but the exposure is considerable at times. If you encounter difficulty staying on the ridge, just drop down a bit on the right (north) side. Got to the summit at 2:00pm, then descended the South slope towards Clyde's Meadow (just below Upper Boy Scout Lake). The East Ridge was a fun climb!
