CREVASSE RESCUE PRACTICE Saturday, June 25, 2005 at 9:00AM Let's meet at 9:00AM at the corner of Crescent and Pinecrest in Altadena, CA (just like last year). Directions: ---------- Those going East on the 210 exit at Altadena Drive and head north. Those going West on the 210 exit at Sierra Madre Blvd and continue along the frontage road to Altadena Drive, and then head north. 1) Follow Altadena Drive up to the base of the hills. 2) Turn right onto Crescent. 3) Park along Crescent where it meets Pinecrest (do not park along Pinecrest! There is no parking allowed on Pinecrest during weekends). 4) We will then walk along Pinecrest, down to Mt Wilson Road, to the bridge on Eaton Canyon. In order to haul a mock 200 lbs weight, we need to bring several empty big plastic jugs with handles (like, the 1 gallon milk jugs or empty plastic laundry detergent bottles, etc, etc: as long as it has handles to thread a static rope through it, it is good). We would need about 24 gallons. There is a creek there by the bridge that we can fill up the plastic jugs: 24 gallons of water ~ 91 liters ~ 91 kilograms ~ 200 lbs Items needed for the practice: ----------------------------- 1) Bring as many as you can of: empty 1 gallon plastic milk jugs or empty liquid laundry-detergent 1 gallon plastic jugs. 2) retired climbing rope(s). 3) carpet scraps to put at the edge of the bridge so that the rope will not bend as harshly on the concrete edge. 4) harness, carabiners, pulleys, belay device, long runners, cordelettes, prussiks (waist prussik, foot stirrups prussik, and 1 additional prussik), stiff hiking boots to prussik in. 5) bring your own lunch/drinks, sunblock, etc. It gets hot standing on the concrete Eaton Canyon bridge. 6) finally, it would be nice if each one of you brings their share of group gear this Saturday so that we can all inspect it before the actual trip date. Please prepare and read/review Chapters 3-4 (pages 67-122) of Andy Selters book "Glacier Travel & Crevasse Rescue" (2nd edition). We will wrap up around 3:00PM (6 hours should be plenty of time to practice). Thank you. -Miguel
