Galena Peak, California, USA (9,324 ft / 2842 m): via Mill Creek Canyon

February 22, 2003

Galena Peak (9,324')

Brief report:

Climbed with mdostby. You start at the Vivian Creek parking lot (6080') and keep going up the Mill Creek drainage 'til you can see the headwall. We took one of the NW chutes. The chute got steeper at the top before we top out onto the ridge. We climbed mixed sections of snow & rock (and some tiny icy sections) with crampons on and 1 ice axe on hand. Watch out for rock fall in late morning (bring helmet). Follow the ridge to the summit. Great views of Jepson Peak, San Gorgonio, San Bernardino ridge. We descended towards the saddle at the Mill Creek headwall/jumpoff (8456' at the lowest point on saddle). We stayed towards the left of the headwall as we were coming down. An interesting day as we saw Search & Rescue personnel and an helicopter in the morning looking for a missing person on Feb 22, 2003.
