Name: Stefan Olsdal Date of Birth: 31st March 1974 Height: 6 foot 4" Nationality: Swedish Education: Went to an private American school in Luxembourg with Brian Molko,where he played drums with the school orchestra. He then followed his parents to England to attend the Musicians Institute in the East End, where he played guitar. He is openly homosexual and lost his virginity at 19. He is also the only member of the band to have had sex on a plane (in his seat!). Often quiet and introspective, he is none-the-less a vital and vibrant member of the increasingly popular band. | Stefan, Placebo's colossus of a bass player , began his journey to musical stardom in 1987 by playing the drums for his school orchestra. He soon realised though, that he'd feel so much happier if he could be playing up front in a band, rather than sitting at the back un-noticed. "So I got on to bass and played that for a while at the same time as learning piano. The first bass I bought was a Fender Precision, because of Iron Maiden's Steve Harris, but since then I've never really tried to emulate a particular sound or hero. I've always thought more about the creative side" he stated in an issue of Bassist magazine. Stefan, like Brian, also grew up in Luxembourg. He bumped into Brian by chance outside South Kensington tube station , two years after Brian had arrived in London. After discovering that they had alot more in common than either of them could ever have imagined, the two of them formed Ashtray Heart . Stefan introduced Brian to Robert Schultzberg, whom he had played in a school band with, and thus Placebo was born. By the time they had played only five gigs together the men in suits ( and not white ones either ) were turning up. They signed to Hut records in January 1996 |
