This is the pen and ink layer underneath the "Buddies" painting. It took me all of one winter to complete and was very painstaking work. I really enjoy the detailed process, even though I am very messy by nature and so have to be exceedingly careful with the ink.
The best feeling is when the horses first pop out of the page - it's all easy after that.
I begin the process with a detailed pencil drawing on a grid, using several photographs. Then I trace the image onto good paper (usually hot-pressed) using a light table.
I use masses of paper towels and take great care with the drawing (india ink is not forgiving). I use rapidograph pens, usually 3 x 0, 2 x 0 and 1 x 0.
