Program Coordinator t San Mateo Adult and Community Education, San Mateo, California t June 1999 – July 2004

Within a collaborative environment of leadership, I was responsible for coordination, development, and sustainable expansion of academic programs, including High School Diploma, GED Preparation, and Adult Basic Education.  Reporting directly to the Director of Adult Education, I hired, managed, and evaluated full-time, part-time, and hourly staff for providing instruction, career and vocational counseling, academic advising and related activities, and recommended personnel actions.  I developed and administered program budgets, as well as collaboratively sought alternative sources of income.  Furthermore, I participated in research, development, and evaluation of all components of the program, including organization, curricula, methods for monitoring students’ access, progress and success; and career and vocational counseling services.  I participated in schoolwide planning as a member of the management team, and served on the school’s Community Advisory Board, district Hearing Panel Committee, district Instruction Council, Cabinet meetings with the Superintendent, and was a member of Friends of the Learning Center (San Mateo-Foster City School District).   Previously, I had developed the new Parent Education program from the ground up: hiring new teachers, assisting in the development of curricula, recruiting students, and establishing classes within the local community.  To this end, I successfully established and maintained partnerships with various community organizations, including other school districts, public health programs, city government, probationary courts, and various non-profit organizations.  As Distance Learning Coordinator, I restructured the program and guided teachers in the redesign of their curricula.  This resulted in an almost five-fold increase in program size with comparable increase in student achievement based on standardized and alternative assessments. As an ESL teacher, I taught a core class of beginning ESL and designed and taught  “Exploring the Internet in English,” “E-mail and Writing Improvement,” “Excel for ESL,” and “Introduction to Windows 95/Word for ESL Students” which provided an interesting alternative to typical ESL classes while providing students with computer skills necessary to succeed in today’s technologically enhanced environment.  Various other tasks included evaluating and recommending computer lab needs and acting as school webmaster, and accreditation self-study coordinator.

ESL Instructor t Studies in American Language, San Jose State University, California t SY 1999 – 2000

Taught grades 2-12 and adult seminars, enrichment classes and tutorials; assigned computer modules to students; designed curricula; planned syllabi; evaluated and chose textbooks and instructional materials; and developed student and teacher evaluation procedures.  As an administrator, I was in charge of designing special projects and managing the adult seminar program.
