| This campaign is set by and on an underground sea. To the people of the sunless sea the surface world is a myth. The sky has not been seen by any of its inhabitants in over a dozen generations. They ply a sea lit by phosphorescent fungi and plankton. There is no magic only psionics and few true deities. Most of the inhabitants were saved from destruction millenia ago by the dragon Fauthir. Here are some the details of the setting. Terminology Roof-the cavern ceiling. A substitute for sky. Vegetation Star Lichen-blue-green phosphorescent lichen usually growing on walls and ceilings (especially Roof). Warped Woman Fungus-a woody fungus typical of volcanic areas. It averages 8 feet high and has a distinctive hunched appearance. It is decorated with leaf like flaps, which feed off of the gases given off by the volcanic gas vents. Hence it is often cultivated near living areas to diminish the danger of poisonous gas. Titan Mushroom-The sequoia of fungi, this mushroom can grow up to two hundred feet tall with a crown 40 to 50 feet wide. It is a woody fungus and is the primary building material for ships. Locations Burning Sea-a boiling body of salt water, lying over a field of volcanic vents. The sea glows with the submarine fires. Most islands are volcanic with black sands and fertile banks of woody fungi. The roof is usually smooth and bare with only occasional patches of star lichen. The inhabitants of this region include dwarves, fire genasi, and beholders. Dead Zone-a mysterious region devoid of phosphorescent creatures and devoid of sea currents. Winds often die here leaving sailors stranded in the dark to starve to death. Or worse, for many incorporeal undead haunt this region. But it is a short cut and contains the ruins of an ancient sunken citadel. The Great Cascade-a 12 mile long peninsula of the High Sea standing 200 feet above the Trade Sea. As such it has waterfalls all along its length except near Rigging Cliff where cargo and small ships can be lowered to the Trade Sea. Traversing the Great Cascade is a task only performed by an expert skipper as the peninsula is turbulent and 2 miles wide at its widest. High Sea-so called because of its higher elevation, this sea harbors the elven civilization as well as the ancient ruins of human empires. It is a fresh water sea and has some mysterious ruins that have ever rising levels. Phantasm-a sea port deep in the Trade Sea, it is a convenient stop on an otherwise barren expanse of water. Ruled by a powerful paranoid telepath. It is a city of illusions, enchantments, and deception. Rigging Cliff-the city at the end of the Great Cascade. Built in the cliff face, it is a web of rigging, block, tackle, and precarious structures. Ruled by the dragon Irleren for the last three centuries it is a dependable source of transport, crews, and vice. Most everything goes through Rigging and most everyone. Trade Sea-The major body of water in the Sunless Sea setting. Most cities and kingdoms are reachable by the Trade Sea or the seas near it (Burning Sea, High Sea, Forest Sea, Lesser Sea, Sunken Sea, but not the Lost Sea). |
