Hemp (Cannabis sativa - L), an annual herbaceous plant native to Asia, is arguably one of the most poorly understood, yet most promising industrial crops in existence. Its ability to thrive in a wide array of temperate climates made it a prominent papermaking fiber throughout the globe for nearly two millennia (see history box below) -- until, that is, hemp production was severely curtailed in North America by legislative decree earlier this century.
