| Soul Mates |
| He sat and stared at the ceiling for a few minutes, thinking about his broken heart and his empty soul, before he returned to his business for the night. They won't miss me. He breathed to himself as he took one of the sleeping pills. Well...Cassie will. The pill got stuck in his throat and he gagged, almost throwing up. She can do better than me, though. She would never date me. We're just not meant to be. Besides, nobody could ever love me again. I'm a fuck up. Pills two and three went down more smoothly as he talked himself into his business even more. As he went to gulp down pill number four, there was a knock on the door. Sleepy eyed, he reluctantly went to get the door. His eyes filled with tears when he saw his ex girlfriend standing there. "Hi Mandy." He said inaudibly. "Yeah, hi." She said as she pushed past him. "I came to pick up the rest of my stuff." She said angrily. Nick sighed painfully as he watched Mandy pack up her life. His stomach was aching badly. He clutched it and watched her. As if on cue, the phone rang. Nick felt his head spinning as he reached to answer it. "Hello?" He said sleepily and obviously annoyed. "Nick?" An unfamiliar though gentle female voice replied. "Who is this?" Nick said somewhat impatiently. "It's me, Cassie. I'm sorry I haven't called you lately." Cassie responded. Nick grew deadly silent. "Cassie....as in my best friend Cassie...as in the Cassie I talk to?" He asked, with a lump in his throat. "....Yes Nick." Cassie replied cautiously. "It's me, the Cassie that you know. I thought I'd call you. I just...ok..this is going to sound soooooo weird..but I had a feeling that you needed someone to talk to...and I guess I was just worried about you for some reason." "Oh." Nick said silently cursing himself. "Oh..and one more thing." Cassie said interrupted Nick's train of thought. "I..I wanted to tell you that I loved you. I know it may shock you and I know we're friends and all....but..I think I'm falling for you.." Nick's head began racing. "Who's Cassie?" Mandy demanded. She started going through the drawers of Nick's house trying to get her forgotten clothes. "Nick?" Cassie asked, concerned. "Nick, are you there? Oh my god..I'm..I'm sorry..I didn't mean to..I mean..I shouldn't have told you..and.." Nick's head spun violently as the contents in his stomach shifted. "I uhh..I think I'm going to be sick." Nick said hurriedly as he hung up the phone and went into the bathroom. He threw up the night's work, partially from being sick and surprised, and partially forcing himself to. After cleaning himself off a bit, Nick emerged from the bathroom deathly pale and extremely tired. "Damn, what's wrong with you?" Mandy said in her normal condescending tone. She looked Nick up and down and sighed. "You." Nick said softly but harshly. "You're what's wrong with me. If you knew you hurt me..oh wait..nevermind. It wouldn't make a different. You don't have a heart." Nick's words penetrated Mandy's swollen ego. Mandy, insulted, stomped out the door. Before leaving, she stuck her head in. "You'll be sorry, Nickolas. You'll never find someone who actually loves you. You're a fuck up. You'll come crawling back to me as always." She stormed out into the night, carrying her clothes and some of Nick's money, as well as some of Nick's heart. Nick collapsed on the bed beside his bottle of sleeping pills. She knew I was hurting. She cared. He sighed as he threw the bottle against the wall. He still wanted to die. Part of him had died. Who knows, maybe she's my soul mate. Nick laughed at first but stopped. Soul mate. The phrase ran over and over inside his head. He picked up his phone cautiously and dialed. "Hey, I'm not home right now. Please leave a message at the beep and I'll get back to you!" Nick sighed. "Cassie? It's Nick. I just wanted to say..I..I..I love you. Call me when you get a chance. I think we need to talk." He sighed as he hung up the phone. He looked up a the ceiling and sighed. Someone loves me. Someone..loves me. He smiled as he closed his eyes and fell into a somewhat peaceful slumber. Cassie's voice haunted his dreams and gave him a reason to smile the famous Carter smile that had not graced his lips for so long. |
