| Epilogue |
| Later that week, as everyone was preparing to go home and mourn, Rebecca approached Nick. "She loved you." Rebecca said in a comforting tone as she put her hand on his shoulder. "Yeah," Nick replied painfully, "but I loved her more." "All she talked about was how happy she'd be to see you, to hold you, to touch you.." Rebecca went on, "if only.." her voice cracked and she looked away. "I know." Nick sighed, as he felt the tears coming again. "..the car wouldn't have hit us." Rebecca continued, her own eyes willing up with tears. "What...?" Nick looked on with puzzled eyes. "The night you proposed, we went out to celebrate. She was so excited. She just kept talking about how marrying you would make her life complete and that she couldn't live or die without marrying you. She vowed that night that she would make your every wish come true, no matter what the cost. We were cruising down the road when the truck came toward us. We never had a chance. The guy was dead drunk, but he lived. Autumn was killed, but somehow she was able to make it here. Some miracle, call it that if you will, caused her to e able to make your dreams come true. I guess love is a powerful thing." Rebecca sighed mournfully at the memories. "I guess she couldn't disappoint you. She knew you wanted to kiss her, to touch her, and to hold her. love kept her alive..and her one wish was to kiss you.." Rebecca's tears streamed down her cheeks as she looked at the now deathly pale Nick. "How do you know she was dead?" She couldn't have been. She just...couldn't..have been.." Nick blurted out angrily as he forced back the tears. "Because I am too." Rebecca said as she faded into the clear blue sky. Nick held his head and cried as he whispered partly to himself and partly to the heavens above, "Forever, Autumn. I'll love you forever." He felt something brush up against his tear stained cheek, something like a kiss, like an angel's kiss. Somehow, he knew it would be all right. |
