Sora looked at the clock on the Kamiya's wall above the dining room
table. It was 5:45 in the morning. Tai was going to the hospital for another
check- up five days after his surgery. The check- up was at 6:30. Only one of
two things could happen: progress or more surgery.
Tai made his way fumbling with the crutches, not that he
didn't know how
to use them, but that he was afraid of yet more surgery and he was shaking
badly. More than anything he wanted the surgery to end.
Sora drummed her fingers on the table. Sora, she thought, be
strong for
him. She put a fake smile on her face as he entered the room clumsily. Poor
thing, he's so nervous, but he's trying not to show it. The thought ran
through her head as Tai looked away from her.
"Ready to go?" she asked.
Tai only nodded, and that's when Sora realized he was crying
and he
didn't want her to know. She tried her hardest not to cry, too.
"Six fifteen," Matt said aloud, "Nicole said
Becky would be here."
Matt waited inside the tack room waiting for Becky to come.
She would be
leaving for Canada today and had obviously not wanted him to know because
since Nicole's slip no one had made an attempt to tell him that she was
leaving. Nicole had said that she would be coming to the stables to say
goodbye to her horse that she rode before leaving for Canada. Her flight left
at ten in the morning. He was going to do everything to stop her.
He saw her come around the corner wearing jeans and
workboots, like him,
except she wore a simple red T- Shirt whereas he wore a long- sleeved white
shirt. The autumn cold was a little too much for him.
Becky brushed her black hair back with her hand while she
fed her horse
some carrots. That's when Matt stepped out of the tack room, clearing his
throat.
"Well, I guess this is goodbye," he said,
confronting her.
She turned around and pushed against him, knocking him into
a stall. She
is STRONG! he thought.
"I'm sorry, Matt," she said, "but I just
couldn't tell you because I knew
you'd try and stop me-"
He cut her off, "Kinda like I'm doing now?" he
asked.
She looked him straight in the eye and sighed. The soft pale
sunlight of
dawn reflected of her black hair and beautiful face.
The waiting clock read six thirty as the nurse called them
into the
doctor's office.
Sora took Tai's crutches as he sat down and she sat down
herself. Dr.
Fuji straightened a stack of papers and took a breath in.
Tai winced, fearing the worst. Sora wore tension on her
worried face,
trying herself to remain calm.
"Mister Kamiya, Miss Takenouchi, the results of these
test and past
surgeries show that January 5th, the day of your accident, you had
musculoskeletal damage. As of today, this August 2nd, you have improved so
much that it amazes even me."
Tai sat in stunned shock with his mouth wide open. Sora
began laughing
with joy and couldn't stop.
The doctor continued, "On this present course, Tai-
chi, you will be well
again very quickly."
Tai wanted to hug something, especially Dr. Fuji for the
great news, but
instead he turned to Sora who had helped him through it all. Locked in each
other's embrace, Sora was shaking with laughter, while Tai was shaking with
tears of relief. It would be so much easier now, he was definitely getting
better!
"Wait, Becky," Matt called, "please don't
go!"
Becky grabbed the keys to her car in her pocket and tried to
unlock the
car quickly. Matt ran, catching up to her, and grabbed her wrist.
"Don't make me do this," she said softly,
"it's already hard enough
leaving you."
Do what? he wondered.
He looked into her eyes passionately, and, believing he saw
just a spark,
a glimmer, of hope, he claimed a kiss.
At first because of surprise, and second because of anger, she pulled out of
his grasp and gave him a hard slap across the face. His hand went up to his
sore cheek as she landed him a punch in the stomach. He doubled over in pain.
Becky hopped in the car, locked the doors, and drove away,
wiping silent
tears.
Yamato stood up and watched as Becky's car kicked up dust
into the new
day's light.
Okay, okay, I know the parts were rather short and so was
