Grand Marshal/Oldest Living Resident

Lifelong Kenilworth resident Michael Peter Wojcio has been named Grand Marshal of the Boroughs Centennial Parade, which will take place on the Boulevard on June 16, 2007, starting at noon.

Wojcio, age 95, came to Kenilworth when he was six months old and has lived in Kenilworth ever since.  He and his wife, Helen Schiller Wojcio, have been married for 66 years and have three children, Jo-Ann, Dianne and Michael David, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Among his childhood memories, Wojcio fondly recalls sleigh riding on Kenilworths former landmark Tin Kettle Hill; watching the filming of silent westerns in the vicinity of present-day Galloping Hill Golf Course; and collecting water lilies at Jackson Pond (previously located where David Brearley Middle/High School now stands) and selling them in Newark for 25 cents per dozen.  He attended McKinley School, Harding School and Roselle Park High School.

Before retiring in 1977, Wojcio served as personnel manager for Union County Trust in Cranford and previously was employed by Lee Fabrics in Newark.  An avid golfer, Wojcios other hobbies over the years have included table tennis, photography, crossword puzzles and the construction of doll houses.

Wojcio was selected as Grand Marshal from among 12 candidates who submitted applications in response to the Kenilworth Centennial Committees publicized search for Kenilworths oldest living resident with the greatest number of consecutive years of Kenilworth residency.
Other applicants, who are being invited to participate in the Centennial Parade as honored residents, include Julia Caforio, Lillian Greim, Leila Hartshorn, Minnie Kern, Liz Kramlick, Minnie Leikauskas, Lucille Cirillo Monahan, Carmela Tripodi Picone, Mary Reichelt, Loretta Kanane Ryan and Josephine Torrenti.

The June 16 parade will be followed by a Community Picnic on South 21 Street, in the vicinity of the Kenilworth Veterans Center and the historic Oswald J. Nitschke House.  These events are among many various activities planned as part of a yearlong celebration of the 100th anniversary of Kenilworths incorporation in 1907.
