Spanish for Special Educators

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the population of 5- to 24-year-olds in the United States increased by six percent between the years 1979 to 1999. During this time period however, the "percentage who spoke a language other than English at home increased by 118 percent." According to the data, the most common language other than English spoken at home is Spanish (72 percent). I know that Spanish is a particularly common language in the area of the United States in which I live, so I have made it one of my goals to learn to understand, speak, and write in Spanish.

This information sheet was inspired by a "Spanish for Teachers" website at http://www.migrant.org/esl/survival_packet/Survival_Spanish_for_Teachers.htm. I have found websites such as this one to be very helpful to me in learning Spanish relating to the educational setting. I am also learning more vocabulary specific to special education, and the following list is the result of my research and learning. This list will continue to grow, and please send any suggestions or corrections to Nicole at [email protected].
