256. Christian SHIVELY (SCHAEUBLIN)
*Personal Note:
I think Christian started the name changing. common sense tells you if they came from Germanic speaking Switzerland, then they would most certainly have trouble spelling the name like it sounded in their mother tounge. Thus you have the many variances on the spelling. It eventually evolved into SHIVELY, But you'll notice several places on Census Records and such that alot of spelling difference between the same families. Shively, Shiveley are the most current variance but most of the line from John and Eve have stuck to the Shively spelling. other variations: Sheybly, Scheibly, Scheibley, Sheibly, Sheibley, Shiveley, Shivley, Shively, Schaeublin, Schaublin, Scheublein, Schiblien. The ones ending with N are Germanic forms, The rest are Americanized forms with SHIVELY as the end result. Although Christian II shows the Shively Bullheadedness... in his will you see variations in his own hand, Hehe... But for the most part Shively was the name they must have agreed upon. All of Christen the II children went by Shively, so by 1745 they must have stuck to the Shively.**
FoBG Newsletter Fall 1991, pg. 44. "The seven children who accompanied their parents, Christian and Barbara Schaublin , to America in 1736 were listed in an entry in the manumission records of Basel, Switzerland: Barbara, Catherine, Christian, Uhli (Ulrich), Anna, Ursula, and Magdalena. The records also states that Christian Schaublin had property worth 1700 Basel pounds, of which he was taxed 190 pounds on receiving permission to emigrate. -- Christian Schaublin, no doubt, decided to emigrate from Switzerland to Pennsylvania because of his religious convictions, acquired either from teachers in the Pietistic or Anabaptist movements. The family left Basel on 8 April 1736 and arrived in Philadelphia on 15 September, a journey of 4 months, 17 days on the ship Princess Augusta from Rotterdam, Samuel Marchant, Master. In List A of the Palatines on the ship, the father is listed as "Christian Sheybly", age 51, with his oldest son, "Christian Sheybly," age 17; in List B, their name is given as Scheublin." The ages of the seven children would have been from 23 to 6 years."***
Strassburger-Hinke, Pennsylvania German Pioneers (PA German Society, Norristown, PA, 1934), Vol 1, pp. 162, 164, 166 (Shively). "Lists 42A, B, and C: Christian Sheybly, age 53, Christian Sheibly, age 17 (pg. 162); also Christen Scheublein and Christen Schiblien (pg. 164); Christen Scheublein, Senior, Christen Scheublein, Junior (pg. 166);" "At the courthouse of Philadelphia, September 16, 1736, one hundred and twelve foreigners from the Palatinate and other places, who with their families, maing in all three hundred and thirty person, were imported here in the Ship Princess Augusta, Samuel Merchant (Master) from Rotterdam, but last from Cowes, as by clearance thence, were this day qualified as usual." In order to qualify they were required to "take and subscribe the oaths to the government."

Tradition says that three Higginbotham brothers coming to what is now Amherst Co. VA abt 1735, John, Thomas, and Joseph. According to the testimony of a grandaughter of John, Tirzah H. London, these Higginbothams emigrated from Ireland.
John came to Virginia about 1735 and contracted for land on Rutledge Creek (2,430 acres). He died prior to 1745 and the land he had contracted for was conveyed to his oldest, Moses, in April 1745. Moses partitioned this land in 1751 among his brothers and sister probably after the death of his mother, (Frances Riley?), who was not mentioned in this partition as receiving any dower.
Tradition has it that John came from Ireland to VA early in the 18th century with 5 children, John, Moses, Aaron, James and Anne and that four others were born in VA, Benjamin, Joseph, Rachel and Thomas.
