Dixie's
Destruction
No, no,
pig!!Pigs are not meant to
be solely kept as inside pets. If they are kept inside constantly, the pig will
become unhappy and unpleasant. One reason why is that being inside all of the
time is boring, and as a result, pigs will amuse themselves by destroying things
in your home. Below are things that Dixie has chewed on or destroyed. Hopefully,
this will help you be aware of things your pig may get into.
- Edges of carpet. For some reason, Dixie likes to go around the edges of carpet
and look for any loose strings to pull on. Once she pulls up even a tiny edge
of carpet, she will proceed to chew on it.
- Walls.
During the day I have to keep Dixie in a small area with her litter box
because she is not dependable about pottying correctly when she is by herself.
She gets bored in the small area and has taken to gnawing on the wall (there
seems to be drywall underneath.)
- Shoelaces. Dixie loves to gnaw on shoelaces. Since it keeps her busy, I
will put an old pair of sneakers where she can get to them, but any other
stray shoe that is left out is doomed.
- Electrical cords and other
wires. When I first got her, Dixie liked to
chew on wires. I broke her of the habit because she could have been
electrocuted.
- Pencils and pens and other small
objects. If it is on the floor, your pig will
either sniff it, chew on it, or eat it. This includes paper, books, pens,
etc.
- Linoleum. I moved to an aparment with a small room for a washer and
dryer. Since I have neither, it became Dixie's room. One day when
I left her alone in her room so I go run errands, I came back to find that she
had ripped up a good portion of one corner of the linoleum. I guess she
was mad that I didn't leave her a blanket. However, she used to stay in
the kitchen of my old apartment, and she never touched the linoleum
there. Go figure.
