Being Creative for Your
PigPigs are unusual
pets. Because of this, you may have some trouble finding pet supplies that fit
your pig's needs. Below are some ideas I have come up with for my
pig.
- Harness. Dog harnesses can work for your pig, but I have noticed one big
problem: the circle that must stay around Dixie's neck must also slip over her
jowls, which are bigger in diameter than her neck. Since the dog harness is
then too big for her neck, she usually steps through this part with her front
legs, which makes the harness hard to take off.
- What I did: I took two large, wide dog collars (24 inches) and hooked
together the metal loops (where the leash is supposed to go) with a key
chain ring. Now, both collars are adjustable to fit Dixie, and both have a
clasp for easy removal.
- Bed and litter box. Cat litter boxes usually have too high of a lip for a pig to
walk in and out of easily. I was using a hanging file box for both: the lid,
lined with newspaper, was the litter box, and the file box, on its side, was
her bed. This was working fine, but Dixie got too big for both.
- What I did: Dixie also outgrew (height-wise) her first pet taxi around the
same time. Take apart the pet taxi and -walla!- she now has a new bed and
litter box, and fits nicely in both. You can also use your pig's current pet
taxi as the bed and litter box since the pet taxi would probably be in
storage most of the time, anyway.
