History of Fashion & Dress
Week 11:  Research with Vintage Garments
1948 Wedding Dress
Lesson Instructions:
To record your study garment,  take photographs of the garment from all sides, INCLUDING THE INSIDE, with close up details, if your camera permits this.
My main study garment has changed, although I am also studying a wedding dress worn in 1893.

I have my mothers wedding dress, which is made out of a silk parachute.  After WWII, it was hard to get nice wedding gown fabric, & on a rural farm in upstate Pennsylvania, there was not a lot of money for fancy fabric. My mother/ grandmother was able to get a surplus parachute, & my grandmother was a talented seamstress.  I still have one of the quilts & a stuffed toy that she made for me when I was a small child.

On a shopping expedition to the city, my mom saw a dress in a window that she really liked. My grandmother was able to remember & copy it for my parents 1948 wedding.  In addition to the wedding dress, my grandmother made the bridesmaids dresses of the same material.

The dress is a floor-length sleeveless dress with a square neckline. The bertha collar/cape is edged with a gathered lace ruffle & covers the shoulders & joins the front neckline edge with a gathered, mock-knotted pouf in the center front.  The darted bodice is lace-covered & comes to a point the center waist. The full 6-gore skirt has a deep hem & is gathered at the waist. Separate long pull on sleeves are made of the same lace as the bodice, are edged with gathered lace & come to a point.  A metal side zipper allows my mom to get into the fitted bodice of this dress. The interior handwork is beautiful, & of course, wont show up in the photography! To the naked eye, there are almost no spots or discolorations, but some discoloration shows up in the photographs.

My grandmother started work on this dress using her treadle machine.  I dont know how old the treadle machine was, but it gave up the ghost in the middle of making my moms dress, & the bridesmaids dresses.  It was at this time that Grandma got her first & last electric sewing machinea Singer Featherweight that was still going strong enough for me to take it to college almost 25 years later.
