Oregon Youth Soccer Association is committed to keeping all young players drugs, alcohol and tobacco free. We have basic pamphlets available to coaches about drugs and we are working with the Oregon Partnership to provide clubs and coaches with any materials they need.
In addition Oregonians will be "kicking-off" their twelfth annual Red Ribbon Celebration in the week leading up to Halloween. This nationwide celebration week, held each year from October 24-31, is designed to raise awareness about the importance of living a healthy, drug-free life. This year Red Ribbon organizers have again chosen soccer as their highlight sport. It is also planned to use the OYSA American Cup Tournament as a Red Ribbon kick-off Jamboree, with a Nike guest speaker and KPTV filming!
In its third year of collaboration with Red Ribbon and the Oregon Partnership, Oregon Youth Soccer set a goal of having 15,000 soccer players wear Red Ribbons and promote drug, alcohol and tobacco awareness. In fall 1997 OYSA boasted over 9,000 players and coaches wearing ribbons on a game day during red ribbon week. A great big thank you to all of you that have supported Red Ribbon.
OYSA Red Ribbon Soccer Weekend has been designated as Saturday & Sunday, October 23 & 24. Clubs can make their ribbon day any weekend in October. Kids will then have their ribbons at the beginning of the week-long celebration. Coaches are encouraged to collect or donate a quarter (25˘) for each of their players and purchase a Red Ribbon sticker that will be worn on their game jersey on Red Ribbon Soccer day. The actual ribbon is 2"x4", supports a soccer ball and the OYSA logo and reads:
"OYSA Supports a Safe & Healthy Drug Free Oregon"
There is a volume discount for clubs ordering in bulk for numerous teams.
All monies made will be returned to the Oregon Partnership to continue their excellent prevention work.
