SAT II Writing ~2(timed essay - 20 minutes)

People often like to put distinction between novelty and progress, saying that being new does not necessarily mean, or lead to advancement. However, in my opinion, 'novelty' - inventing a new thing or bringing new knowledge - itself is a progress, as it broadens the scope of knowledge and variety of choices for the people, and also, it leaves much room for further advancement in the future that the old ideas do. Examples in history and science prove this point prudently.

Koreans never had their own set of letters until mid-15th century, when King Sejong invented one. However, the Korean letters were seldom used. The noblemen insisted that just vecause the letters were new, it did not guarantee that those were better than the Chinese ones. However, to the lowly citizens, who had almost no chance of learning such complicated Chinese letters, this convenient set of letters provided an invaluable tool for communication. This novelty in form of letters proved to be truly an advancement to the Korean society in general.

Novelty can take the form of advancement because it provides much room for improvement. When cellphones were newly introduced to the market, manyu investors disapproved of its possible success in the market. They claimed it was too heavy to carry, low-quality, and too expensive to afford for an average person. Jpwever, more new ideas emerged, solving these problems one by one. Now, cellphones became a natural part of our social and private lives.

'Novelty,' or new ideas are easily thought to be of no value when they are presented. Howeverm, a new idea or concept itself can advance the human lives in terms of broadening the possibilities, and also, providing much more possibilities. For these reasons, novelty is not mistaken for progress. Novelty is a progress.
