It was the last day of term two when five Scouts, one Cub Scout and two leaders from Cromer Dee Why gathered at our Scout hall. After quickly packing camping and personal gear in the trailer we jumped in the cars and headed south for Wagga. We were on our way to the annual State Environment Activity Camp.
On the way south we had some brief stops at Suttons Forest (morning tea) and Yass (lunch) before arriving at Wagga. Light rain arrived shortly after us making life more interesting as we set up our tents.
We had an early breakfast on Saturday morning before the Cubs, Scouts and associated leader boarded the four buses to head out to the tree planting site. We arrived at a large paddock and after getting some instruction on how to use the gear and plant the trees we were on our way.
Three and a bit hours later there had been 10,000 trees planted in the paddock. After a brief lunch we jumped back on the buses and headed back to the campsite for the afternoon activities. The afternoon was spent trying out the abseiling wall, archery and crate stacking, riding the flying fox or watching the local bush fire brigade demonstrations.
Dinner was eaten before we again boarded the buses. This time we were heading for the aquatic centre and its heated pools. Two hours later we were on out way back to camp with Scouts that were a great deal cleaner than when they arrived.
Sunday morning was activity time through to lunch, after which we were back out to another two site for some more tree planting. Sunday night's entertainment was the disco of the campfire, for which Brendon (one of the Gang Show Rovers) proved to be a great MC. We even had Graeme Fordham and an assistant commissioner demonstrate synchronised swimming at the campfire.
Monday morning saw a number of participants head back home while those that stayed on headed into town to visit the Wagga zoo and model railway. Back on site it was lunch followed by some more activities, this time with an environmental theme. These included bug watch, discussions on erosion, drawing and making cubes from mushed newspaper. For those that were still around after dinner it was movies time - in the heated hall.
On Tuesday morning it was breakfast and pack up for our group before heading northward to home. Those that went had a great time with the activities and meeting other Scouts - there were over 100 youth and leaders from Sydney North so there were plenty of familiar faces. We are already looking forward to the 2006 camp.
