Although a lot of people may have remembered Mike Savage as the BBA's Commissioner, Savage actually began his BBA career like most, as a wrestler. Mike Savage made his BBA debut in March of 2001 against BBA veteran Bucktooth Willy and fellow debuting wrestler M80. Although Savage would not win, he would eliminate M80 with the Heavy Metal Kick before being beaten by Bucktooth Willy. This would be the beginning to Mike Savage's biggest rivalry in the BBA, against M80. The two wrestled countless times in Savage's first couple of months in the rivalry, defeating the future Undisputed World Champion on several occasions. Savage even managed to make a name for himself in the Intercontinental Title Division, almost defeating The Meteor for the #1 Contendership.

Savage's promising in-ring career came to a halt however. After his brief wrestling career, Savage announced to the BBA Owner Craig Dixon that he would have to retire from action due to a nagging back injury. This did not prevent Mike "The Spike" Savage from being a part of the Backyard Brawlers Association. In fact, Savage began to target Commissioner BTOF. Savage began sneaking into the Commissioner's throne, and even confronted BTOF and challenging him for his job as Commissioner. On a Friday Night Destruction in June of 2001, Savage would defeat BTOF in a match to become the BBA Commissioner thanks to the help of the Arch Angel.

Savage began his reign as Commish by tormenting the likes of M80, Calypso, The Meteor, Arch Angel, The Impostor, and Bucktooth Willy. At the BBA P.P.V. "Backyard Assault", Savage was able to successfully defend his Commissioner title against the surprise returning BTOF, thanks to a pre-match beatdown by the entire BBA. He would continue to make sporadic appearances for the rest of 2001.

For a brief amount of time, Savage came out of retirement to become a full-time tag-team wrestler. He declined to manage the desperate M80, but accepted Arch Angel's offer. They initially declared themselves as the "Super Powers" of the BBA. They became quite delusional, as they frequently wore crowns to the ring to signify their greatness. Shortly after this was dropped, they became a full-fledged tag-team. "Doomsday" seemed to be destined to great things, but things don't always act out the way they should. Savage and Arch Angel were soundly defeated by The Impostor in a handicap match for their debut. They did challenge C-X for the Tag-Team Championships, but were defeated in the Original C-X's last tag match. Doomsday met their own doomsday when Savage elected to re-retire.

At "New Year's Nightmare" in January 2002, Savage would referee the Hardcore Championship match between Flawless and M80. Again, Savage screwed M80 out of the championship thanks to the help of a Japanese porn VHS tape to the head.

Then perhaps the most unexpected thing in Savage's career happened. Calypso and M80 turned their back on the BBA fans in the summer of 2002, and screwed Real Deal Rob out of the Undisputed World Championship. Unexpectedly, Mike Savage brought back BBA veteran Crazy Joe out of retirement as he destroyed his opponent in his re-debut. Later in the show, Calypso and M80 rushed to the ring and beat down on both Angelove and Chuck Fury. Out of nowhere, Crazy Joe and Mike Savage ran to the ring to confront Calypso and M80. M80 stared down Savage, as Calypso stared down Crazy Joe. Things looked like they were about to get out of hand. Then Savage ripped off M80's shirt to reveal a shirt that said "cX". Calypso and Crazy Joe shook hands, and this whole thing was a set up. cX was reformed, and they had all power in the BBA.

cX was composed of Calypso, M80, Crazy Joe, and Mike Savage. That is, the Administrator, the Undisputed World Champion, the Hardcore Legend, and of course, the BBA Commissioner. Savage would make life living-hell for one particular Brawler, Angelove. Angelove would question Savage's decisions as Commissioner, saying that he was abusing his power and not letting non-cX members be able to break through the glass ceiling. Eventually, this heated rivalry would culminate at "Hotter Than Hell" where Savage would again be able to defend his title as BBA Commissioner.

Eventually, cX would win over the respect and admiration of the fans. This did not sit well with former Network leader Rob Sternberg. Rob petitioned for BBA Commissioner to be removed from office, and that's exactly what happened. In place, Sternberg was named the Commissioner. Sternberg allowed Savage to stay around and help him with the dirty work. Initially, Savage obeyed the commands of Sternberg, and even began to part ways with cX.

Savage began to rebel however. First, he was instructed by Sternberg to fetch him a drink of water. When confronted by Calypso & M80, Savage reassured them that he was on their side, and spat in Sternberg's cup. After Sternberg drank the cup, Savage gave him a "refill" as the games began. Another show saw Sternberg confronting four BBA Brawlers about the possibilities of a title match, in which Savage stuck a "kick me" sign on his back. After the four members followed the sign's orders, Sternberg flipped out and began to realize that keeping Savage around was a mistake.

Sternberg was driven to the point of no return. He could not please the fans, despite his strong efforts to put on great main event caliber matches week in and week out. He viewed Savage on the other hand, who was more popular than ever. As a final act, he gave Savage the ability to win back his Commissioner title in a match against himself. Sternberg cut an emotional promo, and let Savage pin him without taking one punch to the face.

Savage became the Commissioner once again, and remained the Commissioner until the end of BBA. He would go on to referee the Hardcore Championship Battle-Royal at Realm Of Champions II: The Final Approach which was won by Ultimate E. Mike Savage's legacy in BBA will be remembered for his commitment to being a Commissioner and for providing some of the most comical moments in BBA history.
