There are a total of 25 different Mechs in MechAssault, but half are variants of others with different offensive and defensive weapons. In general the variants with the better defences are more competitive. Four of these are downloadable.
The list below shows what Mechs are variants of what.

B. How the Mechs are described
Mech Defense = Estimated numerical number; the higher the number, the more armour. 1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest
Mech Speed = Estimated numerical number; the higher the number, the faster it can run. 1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest
Weapons = Offensive weapons. "Weapon Type 2x" means there is 2 of the selected weapon. The more of the weapon the more powerful it is.
Defensive Weapons = Weapons used to avoid damage
Atlas
Mech Defense : 10

Weapons: Pulse Laser 4x, Autocannon 4x, Javelin Missile 2x
Defensive Weapon: AMS
Notes: A heavy hitter, the Atlas can go toe to toe with any Mech in the game except a Ragnarok or Ymir and win. However, it's a slow, big target and lacks long range power.

Defensive Weapon: Jump Jets
Notes: The sniper Mech of MechAssault. Get a good vantage point and get to work
with the dual Gauss Rifles.

Bowman
Mech Defense : 6
Mech Speed : 6
Weapons: Pulse Laser 2x, Machine Guns 2x, Warhammer Missile 2x
Defensive Weapon: Chaff, Target Jamming
Notes: Difficult to use, but given a few power-ups the Bowman will become can become a nightmare. Fast Mechs that can attack from a distance are good against Bowmans

Catapult

Defensive Weapon: Jump Jets, Target Jamming
Notes: Similar to the Bowman, this Mech that relies heavily on its missiles and target jamming to snipe from afar and avoid damage. A good Catapult player can win a team game.

Notes: Similar to the , the Cougar is recommended over it due to its speed and Autocannons.

Notes: The weakest Mech in the game. It can be destroyed with 2 PPCs or a few missiles.

Notes: A fast mech and one of the best little mechs in little mech games.

Notes: Useless mech, nick named the 'Healthbringer' and it introduced the short range flamer.

Notes: In a battle against heavy Mechs, the Kit Fox is pretty good due to it's speed and hammer Missiles, but other fast Mechs with tracking weapons will tear it up.

Mad Cat

Defensive Weapon: Target Jamming
Notes: One of the most frequently used Mechs online, because it is well balanced, being a very heavy hitter at long range , with good speed and target jamming.

Notes: Very good against Ragnaroks, and not much else. Work up close and chisel away with the Machine Guns with your target jamming.

Notes: A fast Mech good against Ragnaroks and other heavy Mechs by staying behind and hitting them with the Machine Guns.

Ragnarok - beat the campaign to unlock

Defensive Weapon: Shield
Notes: To be good with Ragnarok you have to be good with your Shield. Knock over an enemy with Level 3 Gauss Rifles for an almost guaranteed kill with your Lava Gun.

Notes: Not a single weapon that tracks, means the Summoner is veterans-only.

Notes: Nothing stands a chance against it's quad Machine Guns up close. With Target Jamming, the Thor can be competitive c.f. the defense less Summoner

Notes: A powerful Mech, but the lack of any defense means it not competitive in tough team games

Notes: A fast Mech whose only useful weapon are the lasers. Forget it!

Notes: The Jump Jets give it a versatility that, combined with AMS, makes it hard to hit. Good against heavy Mechs like the
Atlas, but it is one of the most powerful medium Mechs.

Vulture

Notes: A Mech with good long range weapons and weak close up.

Notes: Slow, hot and rarely competitve in team ganes. Raggie is much better.

D. The Best Mech?
There is no 'right' answer as conditions and game type will determine choice.
In destruction and team destruction I would recommend the following mechs:
'Overall Best' : Mad Cat, Prometheus, Raganarok
If the map has cover and suits flying then: Catapault, Uziel, Belial, Kit Fox.
Offensive Weapons -
A. Lasers
Pulse Laser: Rapid-fire, no tracking, weak (green) until powered up (purple). Get in close with these.
Laser: Slight tracking, moderate damage
PPC: Good tracking, charged shot, heavy damage when powered up. Hot.
B. Ballistic
Machine Guns: Rapid-fire, more damage closer to target. No heat.
Autocannon: Moderate damage, slow rate of fire. Hot.
Gauss Rifle: Strong, Accurate, very slow rate of fire. Low heat is a big advantage.
C. Missiles
Crossbow: Short ranged, tracking
Hammer: Heavy damage, modest tracking, large damage radius when powered up. Stay away from these.
Javelin: Preferred long-range missiles with excellent tracking. Hot.
D. Lava CannonRagnarok and Ymir only.
Like 3 powered up hammers: Heavy damage, large damage radius. Not to hard to avoid.E. Death from above
If your in a flying mech you can jump on top of another and do significant damage.
Jump Jets: Allow the Mech to fly for a limited amount of time. Generates lots of heat.
Null Signature: Makes the Mech invisible. The more heat you build up, the more visible you are.
Target Jamming: Jams radar of nearby enemies and stops them locking-on. Lasers, Gauss, PPCs and Missiles won't be able to track you.
Chaff: Attracts all missiles away from your Mech for a limited time.
Shield: Ragnarok and Ymir only. Reduces inflicted damage for 2-3 seconds. Timing the shield online can be a problem.
