All who attended this years male voice choir concert staged by the Chelmsford & District Welsh Society at Christ Church, had a truly memorable evening. The choir, Cr Godrer Aran, which has won many awards, and has travelled extensively world wide, was paying its second visit to Chelmsford. Carys Williams, society president, was pleased to welcome everyone to the concert and thanked everyone for their support. The choir concert is one of the last duties to perform during the presidential year in office, and Carys, on behalf of the society, took the opportunity to present Theresa James of the Essex Air Ambulance, a cheque for 3030, This sum had been raised by the society through various events over the year, ranging from a concert in the cathedral, to a book sale. The choirs repertoire covers popular song, songs from the stage, and classical pieces, and from the first notes of Men of Harlech to the last notes of American Trilogy at the end of the concert the choir held the audience spellbound. Other pieces featured were Nkosi Sikeleli AfriKa, Do you hear the People Sing from Les Miserables, and The Wonder of You, an Elvis Presley song translated into Welsh. John Ifor Griffiths, tenor with the choir, sang the solo in Gunods Sanctus. Aled Wyn Davies, the accomplished tenor soloist, is a serial Eisteddfod winner, and often makes appearances on Welsh television, sang among others, during his two solo appearances, You are my Hearts Delight, The Holy City, Land of the Harp and Anthem from Chess. The bass soloist, also a chorister, Sin Goronwy, is the only professional musician within the choir and has performed in innumerable operatic roles. Most memorable was when he had everyone joining in with Flanders and Swans Hippopotamus song. During the second half Sin was joined by two other choristers Trebor Lloyd Evans and Tom Evans to form The Three Bases and sang Put you together again and Were on the Mend and Bless this House. Newcomer, Alejandro Jones, won over the audience with a different sound to that which is normally heard at a choir concert. Alejandro is a native of Patagonia and is spending six months in north Wales. He has become an honorary choir member for his stay, and solos with folk songs from Patagonia, which he sang in Spanish and Welsh. Choir member Henri Jones proved an excellent M.C. linking each song and soloist with great charachter and humour. The Save the Children Fund served the refreshments during the interval in aid of their funds and before the second half, the mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Duncan Lumley, thanked the choir for coming and providing such magnificent entertainment, and he was greatly looking forward to the second half. The second half began with choir and audience singing the Welsh hymn Gwahoddiad. The evening ended with the singing of Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau the Welsh National Anthem. Eirian Owen, Musical Director, accompanist and conductor of the choir said afterwards that it was a concert that she and the choir would always remember for the wonderful reception they had received from the audience and the magnificent acoustics of Christ Church. The Society wishes to thank the Elders of Christ Church for the use of the premises and all the help and co-operation given by the officers of the church during the day.
262.29 was raised in the interval for Save the Children Fund. |
