Our Choirmaster
CHRISTOPHER G. BORELA has been Coro de Sta. Cecilia's choirmaster since 1996. His musical career can be traced from his participation in various performing groups since he was ten years old.

He was a member of Colegio de San Agustin's Agustinian Larks (1986-1987) and the Manila Children's Choir (1984-1989). At the Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA), where he received his secondary education, he joined the PHSA Rondalla in 1989 and later became its concertmaster from 1990-1992. He also headed the PHSA Kulintang Ensemble (1990-1992), sung with the Himig Ibarang Choir (1992), and performed with the Bayanihan Dance Company (1992). Despite his involvement in numerous cultural activities, he graduated as class salutatorian. A countertenor, he earned his Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance
magna cum laude at the University of the Philippines College of Music and is currently pursuing his Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting.

As a singer, Chris was featured in the
Three Countertenor Concerts at the Abelardo Hall Auditorium in the UP College of Music (2000) and at the Little Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. He has also performed in Paco Park, the Baguio Convention Center, Luneta's Concert at the Park and other venues. He has also sung with other choirs like the Coro d'Amici, Coro Profundo (2000), the World Youth Choir (2001), and the International Rice Research Institute Choir. In 2003, he handled the DLSU College of St. Benilde's Coro San Benildo.

From January to June 1994, he joined the first batch of Singers of United Lands (SOUL) and sang with singers from New Zealand, South Africa, USA, and Serbia & Montenegro. SOUL aims to promote international friendship through the powerful medium of vocal music. SOUL performed, conducted choral groups, led classes, talked about the cultures from which each singer came from, and spread the interest in vocal and choral music in schools, universities, communities, and churches in Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Virginia.

At present, he is the assistant choirmaster and one of the resident choral arrangers of the world-renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers (fondly called the Madz). He has joined the group in their concerts, recordings, performances, and concert tours since 1993. He was part of the batches that competed and won in the 1996 Tolosa International Choral Competition in Spain; the 1997 European Grand Prix in Tours, France; the 50th Certamen Internacional de Habaneras y Polifonia in Torrevieja, Spain; and the 2007 European Grand Prix in Arezzo, Italy.

Chris is a prolific choral arranger, his works performed and recorded by the Madz and its network of choirs (the Madz Et Al family), the UP Manila Med Choir, the Singaporean Youth Choir, the World Youth Choir, the Ateneo Glee Club, the Manila Children's Choir, the Singers of United Lands, and many other choral groups. He is also actively involved in many choral workshops conducted by the Madz called
Sing Philippines since 2001.
