- Make sure seating chart is clearly visible on
overhead and have digital camera ready with plenty of battery life
- Place “getting to know you” activity (found at
bottom) & cardstock for name tent at each seat
- Place markers at each table or group of desks
As Students Enter the Classroom…
- Greet students at the door with a smile and warm “Hello,
welcome to science class. I’m your
teacher, Mrs. Dodson.”
- Ask them to quietly enter the room and check the
overhead for their seating assignment and take their seat
- Ask students to fill out “getting to know you” sheet
once they have located their seat
- When the last student enters the classroom, close the
door and make sure everyone has found their seat
Welcome Students to Class…
- Tell the class how glad you are that they are with
you today
- Make sure everyone knows your name and the class they
are in
- Remind students that they are to be filling out their
“getting to know you” activity
- Give directions for making name tent (to be done
individually after each student completes “getting to know you” activity)
- Ask students to be thinking of two items on the
activity sheet that they would like to share with the class
Getting Started With Introductions…
- Introduce myself- tell the students my name again
(which will be on board)
- About my husband, family, pets
- Where I live
- Where I went to school
- Why I want to teach science and why I want to teach
at this school and teach these students
- Starting with the last name on class role, have each
student give their name and two things about themselves that they were
asked on the “getting to know you” activity (and anything else they want
us to know)
Procedures to Teach Today…
- Teach students the procedure for entering and leaving
classroom
- Teach students the proper way to engage in
communicating during class discussions
1st Day Plan…
- Once students understand the procedure for engaging
in class discussion, pass out copies of class rules and procedures to each
student
- Explain to the students what the papers mean and have
discussion as needed
- Be sure to clarify consequences and rewards- both of
which are based on student actions and decisions-- not mine!!
- Complete any other paper work as required by my team
or administration
- Explain to students that we will have a class web
page from which they can retrieve information such as class schedule,
homework assignments, etc. Let
them know they will find out more about that this week.
- Take each student’s picture individually as the class
completes the science survey
Tying Up Loose Ends…
- Review the bell schedule and basic hall behavior to
students about 6-7 minutes before the bell
- Also, review the procedure for class dismissal
- Ask students if they have any questions at all
- Make sure they know I’m there for them and I
want them to have an excellent day, week, month, and year
Dismissing My First Class…
- Thank students for being here today and tell them I
look forward to seeing them tomorrow
- Have students line up at the door per the discussed
