Canada issued the world's first Christmas stamp on December 7, 1898. It was designed by R. Weir Crouch, Gustave Hahn, R. Holmes and A.H. Howard. This issue marked the beginning of Imperial Post which permitted mail to be sent for one penny (1d or $0.02) anywhere in the British Empire which is shown in red on the stamp. There are two main colour varieties - Scott #85 is black, lavender and carmine whereas Scott #86 is black, blue and carmine. |
