181.              When did settlers from Europe first come to your region?
Europeans interested in the fur trade established small trading posts along the rivers in this area before 1800. These were not permanent settlements.

182.                Who were the first settlers in the area where you live?
Philemon Wright came from New England in 1800 to start a farm in what is now Hull. He established a mill which attracted workers interested in the timber industry.

183.                Why did the early Europeans come to your region in the 1600s, 1700s, 1800s or early 1900s?
The first Europeans in the area were interested in the fir trade. Later immigrants came to start farms or to work in the lumber industry. After 1826 labourers arrived to work fo Colonel By on the construction on the Rideau Canal.

 This region has been called “Silicon valley of the North” due to the success of the high technology industry in this area.

Copper, lead and zinc are found in parts of Ontario, though mining is not important to the economy of the Ottawa region. This area does have sandstone and sand & gravel quarries.

188.          List three natural resources important to your region's economy today.
The rivers and waterways are important to tourism and hydroelectric power generation, and have historical importance to the development of this area; Gatineau Park attracts tourists each year; fertile agricultural land makes Eastern Ontario a rich farming area.

189.          List the activities that are important to the tourism industry in your region.
Rideau Canal, Byward Market, Gatineau Park, Museums, Casino du Lac Leamy, Parliament buildings.

190.          What has always been important to the economy in your region?
Logging and the pulp and paper industry were historically vital to this area and can still be found at locations along the Ottawa River today.

181. Quand les premiers pionniers d'Europe sont-ils arrivés dans votre région?
Les Européens intéressés à la traite des fourrures parcourirent la région
avant 1800. Cependant, ils n’établirent pas de villes ou de villages.

182.Qui étaient les premiers pionniers dans votre région?
Philemon Wright vint de la Nouvelle-Angleterre en 1800 pour établir une ferme à Hull. Il bâtit aussi un moulin ce qui attira des colons intéressés à travailler dans l’industrie du bois.

183.Pourquoi les pionniers européens sont-ils venus dans votre région au XVIIe, au XVIIIe, au XIXe ou au début du XXe siècle?
La traite des fourrures attira les Européens. Plus tard, des colons vinrent établir des fermes et vinrent travailler à des moulins à scie. Après 1826, plusieurs journaliers furent attirés par la construction du Canal Rideau.

La région est surnommée ‘Silicon Valley North’ à cause du succès des industries de haute technologie.

Cuivre, plomb et zinc. Cependant, ces industries jouent un rôle marginal dans
l’économie de la région. Il y aussi dans la région des carrières de sable et de
gravier.

188.Nommez trois ressources naturelles importantes à l'heure actuelle pour l'économie de votre région.
Les plans d’eau jouent un rôle important pour le tourisme et l’hydro-électricité. Le Parc de la Gatineau attire des millers de touristes par année;  l’agriculture  joue un rôle aussi important.

Canal Rideau, Marché By, Parc de la Gatineau, musées, Casino du Lac Leamy, Colline parlementaire.
