Star Overlay Square

3 colors worsted weight yarn, H hook or size needed for gauge. CA = center of star, CB = edging color for star, MC = background color.

Stitch Guide:

Picot: Ch 4, sc in 3rd ch from hook.

V-st: (dc, ch 1, dc) in indicated stitch.

Star Overlay:

Using CA, ch 4; join with slip st to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, (ch 2, 3dc in ring) four times, ch 2. Join with sl st in top of beginning ch 3.

Rnd 2: Sl st in next dc. Ch 4, (tr, ch 3, tr, ch 1, dc) in same st, * ch 1, sc in next ch 2 sp, ch 1, sk next dc, (dc, ch 1, tr, ch 3, tr, ch 1, dc) in next dc. Repeat from * three times. Ch 1, sc in next ch 2 sp, ch 1, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 4. Finish off.

Rnd 3: Join CB with sc in any sc of Rnd 2. *# Sc in back loop only (BLO) of next ch 1, sc in BLO of next dc, sc in BLO of next ch 1, sc in BLO of next tr, sc in BLO of the first ch of ch 3 sp. Form picot, sc in BLO of 3rd ch of ch 3 sp of Rnd 2, sc in BLO of next tr, sc in BLO of next ch 1, sc in BLO of next dc, sc in BLO of next ch 1. # Sc in next sc. Repeat from * three times, then from # to # once. Finish off.

Background square:

Rnd 1: Using MC, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring. Ch 3, 14 dc in ring. (15 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 4, (dc in next dc, ch 1) 14 times. Join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 4. (15 dc, 15 ch 1 sps)

Rnd 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in next ch 1 sp, (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next ch 1 sp) 14 times. Join with sl st in top of beginning ch 3. (45 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in same sp, dc in next 2 dc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc) 14 times. Join wih sl st in top of beginning ch 3. (60 dc)

Note: You will be attaching the overlay on Rnd 5. To do this, hold the overlay in front of the background square with the wrong side of overlay facing the square - in other words, both pieces will have the right sides facing you and the overlay will be on top of the square. Attaching is done as follows: insert hook through picot on Rnd 3 of overlay and into next dc on Rnd 4 of square, work sc through both pieces.

Rnd 5: ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each of next 6 dc, * attach to 1 overlay picot, sc in each of next 11 sc, rep from * three times, attach to last overlay picot, sc in next 4 dc, join with sl st in top of first sc. (60 sc)

Rnd 6: Ch 4, (tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in same st. *# Tr in next sc, dc in next 2 sc, hdc in next 2 sc, sc in next 4 sc, hdc in next 2 sc, dc in next 2 sc, tr in next sc #, (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in next sc. Repeat from * twice, then from # to # once. Join with sl st in top of beginning ch 4.

Rnd 7: Sl st in next tr, sl st into corner ch 2 sp. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp. *# Sk next dc, V-st in next st, (sk 2 dc, V-st in next dc) 5 times, sk next dc #, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner ch 2 sp. Repeat from * twice, then from # to # once. Join with sl st in top of beginning ch 3. (6 V-st per side)

Rnd 8: Sl st in next dc. Ch 4, dc in same st (V-st made), (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner ch 2 sp. *# Sk next dc, V-st in next st, (sk 2 dc, V-st in next V-st) 6 times, sk 2 dc, V-st in next st, sk next dc #, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner ch 2 sp. Repeat from * twice, then from # to # once. Join with sl st in top of beginning ch 3. (8 V-st per side)

Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in same st, and in each dc and ch 1 sp to corner. * (Sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch 2 sp. Sc in each dc and ch 1 sp to next corner. Repeat around. Finish off. (32 sc per side)

Rnd 10: Join CA with sl st in any corner ch 2 sp. Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp. *# Dc in each sc across to next corner #. (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch 2 sp. Repeat from * twice, then from # to # once. Finish off. (36 dc per side)

Rnd 11: Join CB with sc in any corner ch 2 sp. 2 sc in same sp. *# Sc in each dc across to next corner #, 3 sc in corner ch 2 sp. Repeat from * twice, then from # to # once. Finish off.
