H hook or size required for gauge - first 3 rounds measure approximately four inches

Stitch Guide:

fpdc - YO, insert hook from front to back around post of st indicated, YO and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), (YO and draw through 2 loops on hook) 2 times.

split fpdc - YO, insert hook from front to back around post of st indicated, YO and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), YO and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops left on hook), YO, insert hook from front to back around post of next st indicated, YO and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), YO and draw through 2 loops on hook, YO and draw through remaining 3 loops on hook.

Chain 4, join with slip stitch to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 15 dc into ring. Join with slip stitch to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same st, dc in next 3 dc, * (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next dc, dc in next 3 dc. Repeat from * 2 times more; join with slip st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3. Slip st loosely in next dc, slip st into ch 2 sp. (7 stitches per side)

Note: Rnd 3-8 are the pattern rounds - where the star is formed. Any stitches separated by slashes (/) are made in the same stitch. The front post double crochet stitches are all made on a slant. Visualize two upside-down V's, one inside the other, in each quadrant of the square. This will form a four point double star when complete.

Rnd 3: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 space (beginning corner made). In stitches of previous row, do the following: (Dc, fpdc) / skip / dc / dc / dc / skip / (fpdc, dc). (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 space (corner made). Repeat around until beginning corner is reached. Join with slip st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3. Slip st loosely in next dc, slip st into ch 2 sp. (11 stitches per side)

Rnd 4: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 space (beginning corner made). In stitches of previous row, do the following: (Dc, fpdc) / skip / dc / (dc, fpdc) / skip / dc / skip / (fpdc, dc) / dc / skip / (fpdc, dc). (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 space (corner made). Repeat around until beginning corner is reached. Join with slip st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3. Slip st loosely in next dc, slip st into ch 2 sp. (15 stitches per side)

Rnd 5: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 space (beginning corner made). In stitches of previous row, do the following: Dc / dc / dc / (dc, fpdc) / skip / dc / dc / split fpdc around 2nd and 3rd fpdcs of Rnd 4 / dc in top of same stitch as second half of split fpdc (i.e. skip the stitch directly between the "legs" of the split fpdc) / dc / skip / (fpdc, dc) / dc / dc / dc. (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 space (corner made). Repeat around until beginning corner is reached. Join with slip st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3. Slip st loosely in next dc, slip st into ch 2 sp. (19 stitches per side)

Rnd 6: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 space (beginning corner made). In stitches of previous row, do the following: Dc in next 6 stitches / (dc, fpdc) / skip / dc / dc / dc / skip / (fpdc, dc) / dc in next 6 stitches. (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 space (corner made). Repeat around until beginning corner is reached. Join with slip st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3. Slip st loosely in next dc, slip st into ch 2 sp. (23 stitches per side)

Rnd 7: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 space (beginning corner made). In stitches of previous row, do the following: Dc in next 9 stitches / (dc, fpdc) / skip / dc / skip / (fpdc, dc) / dc in next 9 stitches. (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 space (corner made). Repeat around until beginning corner is reached. Join with slip st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3. Slip st loosely in next dc, slip st into ch 2 sp. (27 stitches per side)

Rnd 8: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 space (beginning corner made). In stitches of previous row, do the following: Dc in next 13 stitches / split fpdc around 1st and 2nd fpdc in Rnd 7 / dc in top of same stitch as second half of split fpdc (i.e. skip the stitch directly between the "legs" of the split fpdc) / dc in next 12 stitches. (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 space (corner made). Repeat around until beginning corner is reached. Join with slip st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3. Slip st loosely in next dc, slip st into ch 2 sp. (31 stitches per side)

Rnd 9: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 space (beginning corner made). (Dc, ch 1, skip next dc) 15 times, dc in last dc before ch 2 sp. (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 space (corner made). Repeat around until beginning corner is reached. Join with slip st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 3. Slip st loosely in next dc, slip st into ch 2 sp. (35 stitches per side)

Measure work. If square measures 11 inches, use Rnd 10A. If square measures 11 1/2 inches, use Rnd 10B.

Rnd 10A: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 sp (beginning corner made), dc in each dc and each ch 1 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 sp (corner made), Repeat around until beginning corner is reached. Finish off.

Rnd 10B: Ch 1, 3 sc in ch 2 sp, sc in each dc and each ch 1 sp, 3 sc in ch 2 sp (corner made), sc in each dc and each ch 1 sp. Repeat around until beginning corner is reached. Finish off.
