These are my modifications to make this a 12 inch square.
I used the same modifications for both of these squares.

H hook or size needed for gauge.

Make square as written. Do not finish off at end of Round 6. Continue as follows.

Rnd 7 (Add loops to the hexagon-shaped motif.): Sl st in next 2 dc to reach corner.
Ch 1, sc in same st. * Ch 3, sk 2 st, sc in next st, ch 3, sk 1 st, sc in next st, ch 3, sk 2 st, sc in next st,
ch 3, sk 2 st, sc in next st (corner reached). Repeat from * five times. Join with sl st to starting sc.

Rnd 8 (Now let's make it square): Sl st in next ch 3 sp. 3 sc in same sp, 3 hdc in next ch 3 sp, (3 dc, 2 tr) in next ch 3 sp, ch 3 to form corner.
* (2 tr, 3 dc) in next ch 3 sp, 3 hdc in next ch 3 sp, 3 sc in each of next 2 ch 3 spaces,
3 hdc in next ch 3 sp, (3dc, 2 tr) in next ch 3 sp, ch 3 to form corner. Repeat from * three times.
(2 tr, 3 dc) in next ch 3 sp, 3 hdc in next ch 3 sp, 3 sc in next ch 3 sp. Join with sl st to starting sc.

Rnd 9: Ch 3, dc in next 10 stitches. * (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch 3 sp.
dc in next 22 stitches. Repeat from * three times. (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner ch 3 sp.
Dc in next 11 stitches. Join with sl st in top of starting ch 3.

Rnd 10: Join new color (I used soft white) with sl st in any corner ch 3 sp. (Ch 4, dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1, dc) in same sp.
* (Sk next 2 stitches, V st in next st) 8 times, corner. Repeat from * three times.
(Sk next 2 stitches, V st in next st) 8 times. Join with sl st in 3rd ch of starting ch 4.

Rnd 11: Sl st in ch 1 sp of next V st. (Ch 4, dc) in same sp.
* (Corner, V st in ch 1 sp of next V st) 10 times. Repeat from * three times.
(V st in ch 1 sp of next V st) 9 times. Join with sl st in 3rd ch of starting ch 4.

Rnd 12: Sl st in ch 1 sp of next V st. (Ch 4, dc) in same sp, V st in ch 1 sp of next V st.
* (Corner, V st in ch 1 sp of next V st) 12 times. Repeat from * three times.
(V st in ch 1 sp of next V st) 10 times. Join with sl st in 3rd ch of starting ch 4.

Rnd 13: Sc in each dc and each ch 1 sp around, with 3 sc in each corner ch 2 sp. Finish off.
