League Proposals

- 06/16/03 12:50 AM
The Commissioner's Office is considering a few changes for the upcoming 2004-2005 season. Among the recommendations from league owners: expansion, divisional play and a keeper league.

All owners are expected to return next season, and the league has received petition to award a new franchise to Mindy Anderson, wife of Martin's Ferry Steeler owner Dan Anderson.

The league is already 14 members strong and a new owner would force the search for a 16th team - something that would really drain the talent pool.

Something proposed last season was the possibility of a second league. The idea didn't get off the ground last year, but with continued league interest, the idea could be revisted.

Other owners have suggested a divisional style of play. This would allow more games among division teams, which would create rivalries and increase interest. The idea of a one game inter-league contest was also suggested.

The 2001-2002 season was played at NFL.COM, which allowed divisions. Yahoo doesn't allow that option, so approval would result in a new home for the league.

Some owners have asked about the possibility of a keeper league, where one or two players would be retained for the next season. This would help develop young players with good upsides, or allow for the retention of a star player in order to help develop a franchise. Keeper leagues give owners a sense of continuity from season to season. If yahoo allows this option, it is a strong possibilty the league would further research the issue.

Of the three suggestions, the addition of a keeper position is the strongest possibilty, followed by a re-organization/expansion. If a second league is created, two owners have suggested that they would be willing to headline that league. A second league could also be a training ground for new blood into the CDFL, should existing owners one day bow out, a replacement could be called up.
