MARTINS FERRY TRIES TO "STEEL" ONE

Wallachia 72, Martins Ferry 71

Last season the CDFL Champion Wallachia Raiders lost only three times. One of which was the Martins Ferry Steelers. Opening the 2004 2005 season with a chance to begin defending her title against the Steelers, Wallachia GM Maggie Worth looked to exact revenge.

Both teams played superbly in what turned out to resemble a heavy weight fight with both teams exchanging punches, waiting for the opponent to fall. The Raiders, mostly known for defense, put up 35 points behind their returning superstar QB Dante Culpeppers 5 touchdowns. The Raiders also received a score from wide receiver Deion Branch to take the lead against Martins Ferry.

The Steelers would match the points each time behind an excellent running game. Aging Running Back Curtis Martin turned in an outstanding performance nearly reaching 200 yards in rushing. The Steelers second back, Tiki Barber put up an excellent day of his own putting up 15 points to Martins 21. The Steelers drew closer behind the leg of kicker Jeff Wilkins, whos day at the office resulted in 11 points, bringing Martins Ferry to within two points.

The Raider defense stepped up, shutting down Martins Ferrys last hope, Tight End Bubba Franks. The Raiders New York Jet defense earned 16 points, saving the 1 point margin of victory.

Both teams looked impressive out of the gate and appeared to play well ahead of the preseason predictions placed on both.

Martins Ferry (0-1) entertains Cleveland Steamers (0-1) in Week 2. Wallachia (1-0) hosts SexyMama (0-1). .
