Ismay, Thomas Ismay, of Dundraw (1704-1788), was grandfather of Thomas, of Uldale, who was captured by the French and died a prisoner in Guadaloupe 1795. His son Henry Ismay, of Maryport (1777-1862), was father of Joseph Ismay, shipbuilder and shipowner of Maryport (1804-1850). His eldest son Thomas Henry Ismay, D.L., J.P.. (1837-1899), was educated at Croft House School, Brampton, and apprenticed to a shipping firm in Liverpool. In 1869 he founded the White Star Line. His eldest son Joseph Bruce Ismay (1862-1936) was chairman of the WHite Star Line and of the Asiatic Steam Navigatin Company. (BLG17; Window, Maryport Church; MI'sMaryport Churchyard). Arms Azure a chevron between in chief a cross pattee between two bezants and in base a cross pattee fitche all Or. Crest. An esquire's helmet Proper in front thereof a cross pattee fitche Or. I Thomas Ismay do hereby give and bequeath to Mr. Joseph Ismay of Maryport the son of Henry Ismay the sum of eighty pounds sterling. Also to Henry Ismay son of the above Henry Ismay all my nautical instruments and watch or if they be lost or destroyed before he receive them the sum of forty pounds in lieu of them. Also to Charlotte Clark daughter of the above Henry Ismay the sum of forty pounds sterling. The remainder of my property of every description I bequeath to Charlotte Ismay wife of the above Henry Ismay of Maryport to her sole use and benefit for the sake of bringing up and educating the younger children. I also appoint the above Jospeh Ismay of Maryport sole executor to see the above purposes duly fulfilled. I also declare this to be my last will and testament and revoke and annul any formerly madeas witness my hand Thomas Ismay.
