Ismay, Thomas Ismay, of Dundraw (1704-1788), was grandfather of Thomas, of Uldale, who was captured by the French and died a prisoner in Guadaloupe 1795. His son Henry Ismay, of Maryport (1777-1862), was father of Joseph Ismay, shipbuilder and shipowner of Maryport (1804-1850). His eldest son Thomas Henry Ismay, D.L., J.P.. (1837-1899), was educated at Croft House School, Brampton, and apprenticed to a shipping firm in Liverpool. In 1869 he founded the White Star Line. His eldest son Joseph Bruce Ismay (1862-1936) was chairman of the WHite Star Line and of the Asiatic Steam Navigatin Company. (BLG17; Window, Maryport Church; MI'sMaryport Churchyard). Arms Azure a chevron between in chief a cross pattee between two bezants and in base a cross pattee fitche all Or. Crest. An esquire's helmet Proper in front thereof a cross pattee fitche Or.
