Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon for Ava Winifred Kilpatrick, 84, a longtime Cortez resident who died Saturday, August 30, at Southwest Memorial Hospital.
Rev. Jim Williams of the Presbyterian Church conducted the funeral which was held in the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Burial was in the Cortez Cemetery.
Mrs. Kilpatrick was born in Fulton, Mo, March 31, 1891. She had been a resident of Cortez since 1909.
Surviving are her daughters, Dorothy Pagone of Englewood and Betty Neal of Dolores, three grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, her brothers Ray Ismay and John Ismay of Cortez and sisters, Ruth Fowler of Cortez, Roberta Hess of Phoenix and Ardell Christensen of Mountain Home, Ark."3Census USA Federal 1910 .

Hallie Ismay
On December 18, 1905, the kind and generous Hallie was born to John and Susan Neely in Ripley, Oklahoma. She was one of 12 children: seven boys and five girls. In 1916 when Hallie was 11 years old she moved with her family to homestead in Cahone, Colo. She attended school in Cahone. She worked at Schaafs Store in Yellow Jacket where she met Ray Ismay whom she married on May 9, 1928. Ray always said he "married her because she made such good biscuits." Hallie and Ray made their home in the South Valley of Montezuma County near the foot of the Ute Mountain where she resided the remainder of her life. For many years they raised sheep on their land. They spent summers between two sheep camps on Hermosa Divide. She rode a horse every day between the two camps taking salt, groceries and caring for the herds.
Hallie was a great steward of the land. She was commended by the U.S. Department of Interior for 62 years as unofficial custodian of Yucca House National Monument. Former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton recognized and honored Hallie for her conservation of our National Treasures.
Her sister Blanche Barlow of Red Bluff, Calif., along with many nieces, nephews and friends, survives her.
Hallie passed away at the home of her niece,Bernice Lewis in Cortez, Colo., on June 24, 2002 at the age of 96. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice of Montezuma, 1108 Mildred Road, Suite B, Cortez, Colorado."

"Amos Ismay
Amos Ismay, 75, of the Carpenter Mine Road died unexpectedly Firday afternoon. Mr. Ismay was born April 7, 1903 in Crystal Falls, and graduated from Crystal Falls High School. He had been a lifelong resident of the area and was self employed as a potato farmer until his retirement. Surviving is a sister, Mrs Ivy Scofield of Duluth. Friends called after 5 p.m.Sunday at he Plowe Funeral Home. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. William Smith, pastor of St. Mark's Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will be un Evergreen Memorial Cemetery."4Census USA Federal 1910 .
