The death occurred on Tuesday at No 11, Framlington Place, Newcastle, of Mr. Matthew Parker Ismay, proprietor of the well-known firm of Messrs John Ismay and Sons, manufacturing and analytical chemists, wholesale druggists, etc., City Road, Newcastle. A Novocastrian by birth, the deceased was the second son of the late Mr. John Ismay and commencing his commercial career at the age of 18, for a long period of years maintained an active interest in the business, whose present headquarters were built under his personal supervision. Many years ago the trading title of the house was Daglish and Ismay, and its activities were directed first from premises in Sandhill, and afterwards in the Groat Market (where the Royal Electric Theatre now stands) Mr. Ismay who was aged 73, took no part in public life. His wife predeceased him some years ago, also two sons, but he is survived by two sons and three daughters. He had been ailing for some time and will be mourned by a wide circle of business and private friends. The funeral takes place in Jesmond Cemetery at 11:30 to-day. A large and representative company of mourners followed the remains Mr. M.P. Ismay, to their final resting place in Jesmond Cemetery yesterday. The deceased was principal of the well-known firm of Messrs John Ismay and Sons, manufacturing and analytical chemists, wholesale druggists, etc., City Road, Newcastle. The last rites were performed by the Rev. F.E. Croisdale Vicar of St. Luke's. The chief mourners were:- Mr. Stanley Ismay (son), Mr. George Ismay (son), Mr. Thomas Ismay (brother), and Mr. F.T. Maling. Among others present were Messrs W.Kerse, F.G.Gilderdale, and R.M.Bowman representing Messrs John Ismay and Sons), Mr. Vincent Thompson (Messrs Dees and Thompson), Mr. Joseph Miller, Mr. W.E. Beck, Mr. Charles Walker,Mr.T.M. Swinburne (Forest Hall), Mr. G.N. Nelson, Lieut. J. Austin, R.A.S.C., Mr. C.A. Smith, Mr. Leslie Richards, Mr. W.F. Allen, Mr. T.W.Sharp, Mr. Charles Atkinson (Wylam) Mr. H.K. Denton, Mr. Joseph Greene, Mr. E. Dodds (Low Fell), Dr. Wardale and Mr.E. Do you now believe in Santa Claus afterEpsom? If so, then the Newcastle-born part owner has another tip for you. "Keep your eye on my horse Camisado, which may be at Goodwood this summer," he says. "I think he will run a good race" ventured 80-year old Mr. John Ismay, jubliant after the present Santa Claus brought him this week. His share was 36,000 pounds to be exact, and on Wednesday Mr Ismay returns to Monte Carlo - where he lives most of the year - to spend it. His grandfather, a Dr Lownds, was one of the first shareholders in Armstrong Whitworth
"He lived in a large house in Osbourne Road opposite Jesmond Station. It is now a hotel" Mr. Ismay told me last night.
His father, Mr Thomas Parker Ismay, owned James and Co lead works in the Ouseburn Valley under Byker Bridge. The present Mr. Ismay, as well as helping to run this business when the rest of the family moved to Canada, practised as a solicitor for five years in Newcastle until the first World War began. He served in the 21st Royal Fusiliers, spent another three years in Newcastle until 1921, then he went abroad himself. Most of his time is now shared between Britain, Monte Carlo and Ireland, where another six of his horses, including Camisado, are in training.
Dismal
"I lead a very simple life in the South of France," he told me, " swimming, walking, none of the high society stuff, although I did meet Prince Rainer and Princess Grace at a tea party once. "Suntanned? - Well of course I am suntanned. After all, the weather there is better than this." said Mr. Ismay, pointing through the dismal window at sheeting rain. He's owned horse for the past 40 years. Famous names include "Spam," which won the Irish St Ledger during the war and came third in Australia's Sydney Cup. He's had some good jumpers too, including Bimco, which sired Teal, a Grand National winner. " I haven't been to Newcastle for years but anyway, most of my old pals are dead now." said Mr. Ismay. "Until a few weeks ago I used to see a old friend , Thomas Sopwith, who was a stockbroker, but I don't seem to hear from him now." And it is years since he turned out in Northumberland County colours as a Rugby forward or sailed a small boat a Blyth with the Northumberland Yacht Club. " I'm a Geordie and proud of it." said Mr. Ismay, "but oh dear, the climate up there."."

He was a stonemason, he appears to have only been a part-time publican for he died as a result of a fall while building a bridge. Although the river broke his fall and he was able to swim to the river bank, he apparently died of internal injuries. He and his wife, Dinah, ran the Station Hotel at the foot of the bank in Swalwell opposite the railway station. After the railway line from Newcastle to Blackhill was closed down, the name of the pub was changed to "The Poacher". When their son Thomas Arthur was ababe in arms they moved to the top of the bank at Whickham to the "Three Tuns" now called the "Bridal Path".6Census UK 1881 , RG 11/5043 ff74 Swalwell.
